Main reason being because it wouldn't matter to you guys, most of you aren't into Liquid D&B, as far as I know at any rate..

I think people overlook the cost of software and stuff. Sure you can make tunes with just a laptop and earbuds and pirated software, but it's going to sound like Mt Eden.
To get a half decent mix down you're looking at monitors, or headphones at the very least, plus all the software going into it (assuming the producer actually buys their software, which is another thing all together). Throw in a sound card and you're looking at some hefty price tags. I have a pretty limited studio and I'v put at least $3000 into it. Of course I'm not expecting to make all that back, but it's pretty frustrating when all that work is just taken for granted.
And to all of you who feel justified in taking music for free because you 'produce and release stuff for free', get your heads out of your asses. First off, I doubt the quality of work is the same as the artists you are riing off. Secondly, you probably aren't trying to make a living off the music. If I walked into a car dealership and asked for a free car because I built a go cart out of a lawnmower and gave it to Haiti,they'd laugh their asses off and call the psychiatrists. Why is it any different for music?

If an artist selling his/her music is prioritized to justify the cost of shelling out on gear to make that music, then thats the artists fault. You can invest a minimum cost into the making of music these days and produce more than adequate results, I have heard music made on just a dell laptop and £50 sony headphones, running all open source/free software and nothing else, that can stand-up next to music made on a £3000 budget.

Don't own any of them either though is downloading a mix from a DJ classed as piracy? I don't have any on my comp at the moment though I was just wondering

It's still a grey area with mixes legally, but most copyright holders don't give a fuck as long the mixes don't contain full unmixed tracks and the mix is not for sale, it's free promo at the end of the day.

its not illegal to back up your music. same way that you can rip from cd to store on your computer. its like recording from the tele, its all good as long as you don't copy, loan or publicly broadcast it. might be wrong though...

i think this is the main thing that stops people that are anti-download from having a water tight case. if something isnt for sale first hand then someone downloading it for free isn't taking money out of the hands of the artist. ESPECIALLY when its not available digitally! its not like me forking out £100+ for a second hand copy of anti-war dub is benefitting DMZ when all the money's going to a guy that bought it years ago. why not download a 320 rip or a copy of warrior dubs. know what i mean?
