How do you notch a reese/growl/etc. effectively? I get that if you automate a notch to move drastically across the spectrum it makes this awesome phasey sound, but I'm really confused why people (DOA especially) recommend to notch reeses around 400-600 Hz. I can't really hear the phasing when it's automated only a few hundred hertz, and it seems to only reduce the meat of my bass sounds. I must be doing something really wrong because apparently many awesome neurofunk basses automate notched filters. Putting a static notch doesn't make a ton of sense to me unless it's part of mastering...so where am I going wrong?

Here's an EQ that I use to notch my basses.

Use your ears, basically - every reese is different because it'll use different frequencies, have different effects, and be used in tunes with different element surrounding it.

I'm not sure how this happened but in Ableton on the side where all the Ableton instruments and effects are it got messed up. It has them alphabetically from Z-A. This probably isn't a very important question but it's pretty annoying when I want to get an effect or instrument. If anyone knows how to fix this a reply would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Will

just click the bar above the list and it should put them back into a-z.

i've written this on some other threads but worth mentioning here too. any ableton specific questions are always best asked in the ableton q+a thread because people post in that thread regularly generally the questions get noticed and answered quicker than raising a new thread for it.

also if you use ableton and you've never read the thread then it's worth going through it because there's a wealth of great tips there, i've learnt plenty from it.

thats not a notch. you need to have one spike that pronounces the frequencies just above or below the freqs that you reduced.

any DAW capable of using vst plugins, the program will have a vst plugin folder setup (in preference) and you will need to drop these dll files into this folder, then open the plguin in the DAW.

Bumping the topic and another question about kicks, this one about the tail...If I want to eliminate any rumbling after each kick, besides transient shaping, should I also just make sure it has a short tail to begin with? On top of that, a lot of my samples tend to have one of those tails where it extends way longer than any of the actual waveform, where it looks almost flat if not completely. Can I just trim that off automatically? Does that serve any purpose? Does it interfere with the kick that follows if they're say a doublestop?

if you bounce something to mp3, then put it back into something or change it and make a second mp3, does this affect the sound quality? Double mp3ing? Was I supposed to use affect or effect? I'm :corntard: :corntard: :corntard: :corntard:

my daw will convert stuff to wav before further manipulation... then ill have to recode it to mp3.. so id say, yes... theoretically i could do that operation 100000 times and end up with a shitty mp3

This seems like the sort of thing there'd be a Google style experiment for...

Ok, there is a lot of stuff on this, more than I'd like to cut & paste right now. Basically as you encode and reencode digital media, a couple of bits of data every million or so will get lost. Inevitable part of digital file manipulation. Do it enough and it may become perceivable to the trained ear.

how do i set logic to drag the automation data across with the midi in the arrange window, its becoming rather painstaking to re write all my automation every 16 bars

more then one way to do this... normally when i copy or move a midi region logic automatically asks me if i want to move the automation along...

that way i can Alt drag any region and make automatic duplicates of the automation.

Chewie also posted a cool tip centuries ago in the automate the alpacas in logic thread... basically, if u open automation view... (press A in arrange view) .... draw a nod and then press Command + E ... it will open the automation event list... kinda like the usual note event list when u press e while in piano roll mode... but for automation data.

from there if you are in that Automation event list and press Command + 1, it should bring up an arrange window, but that displays only automation info. that window allows u to manage arrangement for automation info only... u need to screen lock it because there is a gui bug (i find) which gets it to switch to the normal arrange view as soon as u double click on a chunk of midi info... but explore that window, it basically allows u to copy, paste, move, chop chunks of automation... and it translates to the regular arrange page.

its fiddly and i dont remember the details, but try to open it, and fux with it... it allows u a great deal of manipulation...

there are also ways to click select a couple of points together in the regular automation window (arrange , a) ... and to copy-drag it (if you hold alt and drag it i believe) in the regular automation lane, + also to transfer automation data from one parameter to another (hold cmd while u choose a new parameter, starting from current copied parameter)... (if i remember correctly)

all of this is written in the manual from what i recall..
