Because it's notoriously difficult so saying you've finished it makes you cool in their eyes. And because it's so difficult to ascertain any concrete plot you could probably just lie and claim you have finished it either way.
the ultimate hipster book is 'catcher in the rye', isn't it? or 'on the road' imo. one of my uni tutors put finnegan's wake on a reading list as a joke to see how many people would try to read it, i gave it about ten pages, it's utterly nonsensical.

Got this for Christmas as well, read the time machine and the island of dr moreau, half way through war of the worlds. Fantastic writing and there are illustrations and the cover looks awesome.
Love books that make you think about society and human nature, h.g wells does it so well. (no homo)

you realise lord of the flies is entirely concerned with hipsters, jack is a huge brostep fan whereas Ralph prefers minimal percussive music. metaphorically obv.

I'll agree with you about gatsby, but to me catcher in the rye wasn't that great if I wanna hear about some spoiled asshole kid who thinks his life sucks and runs away I can watch reality tv.... At least thats what I got out of it

I feel I should say that just because something is seen as being liked by hipsters doesn't make it bad by default.

oh yeah totally, my opinion is that i don't care who likes what. just because a certain subculture likes something doesn't mean i'm associated with them if i happen to like it too

Can't believe I forgot him - Joseph Conrad.
The language in Heart of Darkness is so beautiful, and considering that Polish was the guy's native tongue, and he only learnt English at 16 is very very impressive.
And he used to live near me, whey!
