people dont always rationalise their moral decisions
there's even sayings we use on a regular basis to describe these events - 'knee-jerk reaction' 'reactionary' etc.
once people are questioned on their moral beliefs, then they rationalise them
some people think everything through, other people really, really don't...
but it depends if you consider subconscious or instinctual reactions/emotions as being rationalised, which itself, is a logical misnomer - rationalising something requires conscious thought.
its not semantics, its just the way people act.

Yeah but then 5000 miles away someone wont go near a pig with a ten foot barge pole but will eat a dog without batting an eye lid.
Thats just down to where you were born more than anything.
Ofcourse you can change over a period of time from outside influences but still.
I could never knowingly eat dog because I have an emotional
attachment to them but had say a dog bit my ear off at a young age maybe id be all for killing the bastards and eating them?
Also most of these food animals have been bred to be that way, true wild chickens for example are thin and vicious bastards, perhaps they would be extinct if they wernt so tasty? had people had the hind sight aswell to keep a few alive for the future we might still have american buffalo and dodos roaming about.

5 reasons why I'm fine with eating animals.
You only have to look at our teeth when deciding if we are supposed to eat meat. Canines mofo.
If people didnt eat meat a lot of farm animals would die out as they only exist to be eaten and are too domesticated/stupid to survive in the wild. It's not like I'm eating endangered Tigers or anything.
If you are a vegitarian and you own a dog/cat then your animal is responsible for the deaths of more animals in its pet food then I am in my food.
Vegitarians are really preachy, condescending and irritating which makes me want to eat meat more.
Fillet steak.

who cares we'll all be eating hyper-nutritional super-genetically modified starch based products in 100 years anyway that give us all the protein, amino acids, electrolytes and vitamins we need

actually teeth do not show proof that we are supposed to eat meat they show that we have ate meat for such a long time that our bodies have adapted accordingly.

I try and do things that are necessary or beautiful (preferably both) and in my opinion eating meat is neither.
Also I think its mad that you have to cook meat and add spices just to make it taste acceptable/not kill you. Pull a carrot out of the ground, job done. I guess I'm just a lazy bastard eh

people who don't recognise the art of good cooking shouldn't make value judgements about those that do

Instinctive acts are... instinctive... surely? I.e. they don't need to go through the moral filter we just do them? Its easy enough to look back at a past instinctive reaction and question your own morality (insulting someone who accidentally hurt you for example)
Its all a bit Schrödinger otherwise isn't it? Its not (ir)rational until you're asked about it? How would you ever work that out without asking someone and ruining the experiment?
