Actually hip-hop was about the dj. MC's were only ever meant to showcase the dj; the better the MC the better he could showcase the dj, and thus the evolution of the rapper.baron_von_carlton wrote:Hip Hop has and always will be about the battle. Actually, hip hop was about the dj, Mc, b-boys, Graf writers and other artists coming together and settling differences through a common medium. And also having a good time at the function.cmgoodman1226 wrote:Actually hip-hop was about the dj. Where exactly did I say one part is more important than the other? I was only stating WHAT hip hop started as; in the beginning it was never about MC's battling; it was about the dj. Obviously it eventually not only took on the context of a genre but also of a culture in itself and as MC's progressed, their role began to take on new meaning.kidshuffle wrote:Actually, hip hop was about the dj, Mc, b-boys, Graf writers and other artists coming together and settling differences through a common medium. Aight sorry it's been all about the battle/mc since the early 80's then. Pretty much since the beginning.kidshuffle wrote:Actually, hip hop was about the dj, Mc, b-boys, Graf writers and other artists coming together and settling differences through a common medium. I should have said no one part WAS more important. Anyways, it was again, about competition within all 4 elements. Herc was a DJ, Dancer, Graf artist and an MC; before "hip hop". Kool Herc had to battle his way for a name as a DJ. He looped breaks so dancers could do their thing to it, and everyone agreed he was the best at the time. He started the art of rapping, and again, was the best/most original at the time. His graf notoriety helped bring people out. All of these facets molded hip hop into something special...and it was all birthed out of competition. Hip hop after Herc was just about who could rock the party best (you know, since there were crews, not just singular DJ's like today). You're right that it was never just about battling mc's... but it was never just about the DJ. As cliche as it sounds, it was just about an urban way of life. It all came from function/juke joint/block party culture.cmgoodman1226 wrote: Where exactly did I say one part is more important than the other? The oestrogen levels of these modern rappers is way too high for anything they say to be taken seriously.rayman612 wrote:i really dont understand the hype about that kendrick verse

Bitch-ass mother fucker. If that has ignited the rap industry then fucking hell... I just don't know what to say. The best I can hope for is that this keeps escalating and eventually Drake with be the victim of a drive-by water ballooning.
Be that as it may, from a musical standpoint, DJs took centerstage for a decade like horns did in jazz and guitars do in metal. It was DJ centric music and the DJ's ability to manipulate turntables and isolate breaks what was defined the music. MCs were part of the experience, but they weren't the focal point of the music the way they since the early '80s, when hip-hop as a whole moved into being a recorded music style rather than just a performed one. I think it's safe to say for the first 10 years of its existence, it was DJ centric and went to being MC centric music starting in the '80s.kidshuffle wrote:No, I'm with you Baron.
