Yeah I'm not out to get into a full blown argument but I know the difference between mastering and mixing, and if I was getting booked on the strength of my productions I'd check my mixdowns in the studio rather than in the club. As a punter, I want to hear quality music presented well. I don't want to be part of the guinea pig ''does this sound alright to you?'' crew - that's what producer friends with monitors and boomboxes are for. If you can tell something is fucked with your mixdown, chances are someone in the crowd will too.
bokatordubstep wrote:and for the record (no pun intended) it would piss me off too if i had spent hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars on vinyls only to see the emergence of CDJ's.
It's not that. I started DJing after CDJs were invented. I had the choice, and still do, but vinyl came out well on top and always will. MP3s and WAV are worthless. You can't download vinyl.

Think of John Peel with his rooms full of vinyl - that's some cool shit.
Then think of MP3 Terry with his four terrabyte hard drives full of wavs and 320s - that's some geeky shit.

Only true advantage which digital has in my opinion is being able to search ''Mala'' on Serato and have all your Mala tunes come up. Sifting through my records trying to get it on the platter in time for the next drop is the only thing which stresses me out about vinyl mixing.

riiiiight. well unless you're playing at a club with 6" monitors or you've got a RIDICULOUS sound system at your home studio, there will DEFINITELY be things that you hear on the club P.A that you don't hear "in the studio"....

and on my magical CDJ's i could be outta that tune in less than 30 seconds if the mixdown were too fucked for the guineas ;)

so how many tunes could Terry's 4TB hard drive hold? and how many can you carry in your record bag? REVENGE OF THE NERDS....

anyways, enough from me. :)

I can't take credit for MP3 Terry. I think it was Mystery of The Deep End from Devon who came up with that one. Pretty sure he even put him down on a few flyers for a laugh

I might have got the wrong end of the stick though, and there may actually be a DJ called MP3 Terry from Exeter.

This is classic forum horseshit if I have ever heard it....

Mixdown on flat, true sounding, unflattering nearfield studio monitors... or mixdown on a heavily limited, hugely flattering, sub heavy club P.A system?

And as for bring mastering in the equation for using CDJs...? Plenty of released CD and mp3 tracks get mastered. And if a producer is playing his unreleased straight from DAW track on a CDJ he just needs to know how to use a good limiter and maybe push the gain on the mixer a bit. If he can't do that then his productions are probably not worth hearing anyway. That is the small trade off for hearing an exclusive, brand spanking new tune, something 1210s could NEVER do That's what gets the punters excited, not his piss soaked fingerprints on polyvinyl chloride.

People who don't like CDJs.... have you ever used the CDJ1000 interface?

Depends which version.

I used some mk1's friday night and they were shocking, jog wheel was all over the place, cue and play buttons where shit aswell.

If i was going to use cdjs again in the future they'd have to be mrk3's.

hahahaha. you are a cock mate, how do you think you are some superstar dj? FAIL.

I doubt you'd be able to get anyone skanking before you got someone to take a fucking tshirt off. STFU.

O M G. You do this? I know exactly what thats saying; im going to need more than earplugs if i go to a night with you djing. Thank fuck you aint signed otherwise id have to listen to your shit whilst im browing through chemical.

Serato or Tractor Scratch is as far as id go, CDJS are for pussy djs. Fair enough if your a top notch producer because your not going to be in your room everyday mixing away everyday. If your centrally a dj then you dj with vinyl, the amountt of extra skill needed just means you are a better dj...but for someone like you i rather doubt it.

 Enough with the hating!
Hate on my shirts, CDJs, vinyl, .mp3s, .wavs, chicken soup, landlords, the economic climate, Skegness, Obama, your mum, whatever, but please stop hating on each other!

This place has changed. When I joined, if I'd posted these shirts back then, half the forum would have bought them and the other half would have just laughed at them. 2010 - you're all just going round in circles beefing each other. Check the DOA thread. The only difference is we use slightly longer words over here.

Most producers do this ie. play out a tunes thats nearly finished but not quite there yet, the tune will sound different in the club to the studio its not mixing down in the club its just testing the mix in the club to see if theres anything that stands out which wasn't noticed in the studio before its send off for mastering rather than when its too late to do anything about it. Just being in a club is going to damage your ears, unfinished tunes won't do that any more than a finished tune if the mix is good (don't belive everything ME's tell you they will exaggerate the benefits of mastering if it helps line their pockets) and no-one is even going to realise the tune is unfinished anyway as its being played in a mix.

also producers will drop unfinished tunes to see the reactions of the crowd aswell. see if it goes down well in a rave before the producer decides wether or not they finish it
