Why do these threads often descend into obfuscation? While mildly entertaining, it often derails any meaningful conversation.
Knell, I agree about the time factor in regards to the Drake Equation. Specifically in regards to SETI, by the time we received any signal that could hint at an advanced civilization, it could be from a time 10's of thousands of years earlier. This is also considering that our own civilization has only evolved to a point to use any sort of radio technology just 130 years ago.
Nonetheless, using probability mathematics, Drake estimated that there could be at least 12,000 planets that could sustain life within our galaxy and he was using a very conservative number in the Drake equation of .001. Carl Sagan was much more optimistic and used a 1 in the equation which would theoretically have this galaxy populated by a million planets with some sort of lifeform.
