"The DSEi arms fair [10-13 September ] is a bi-annual event where our [U.K] government invites countries with dubious human rights records and allows them to purchase the finest new weapons money can buy. DSEi’s record of inviting countries involved in conflict or the violent repression of the people is worrying and immoral. Previous fairs have seen Libya, Bahrain, India, Pakistan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia invited and no doubt some of these countries will be there again this year.

DSEi is organised by the government department UK Trade & Investment’s Defence & Security Organisation (UKTI DSO) and Clarion Events. UKTI DSO’s support is crucial to the success of DSEi and its continued existence.

This year’s event takes place from 10-13 September and will feature over 1,000 arms companies from around the world, displaying arms ranging from rifles to tanks to fighter jets to battleships.

Is this really something our government should be involved in? Research shows that most British people object to the UK exporting arms, except perhaps to close allies. The government persists in subsidising arms companies by about £700m a year. In a time of austerity and devastating cuts, this cannot be justified.

DSEi should never darken our shores again."

It's not likely the arms-fare will actually be stopped , but awareness is better than nothing. Times of austerity ,recession,cuts and privatisation mean nothing to those that capitalize on the war machine. What happens when we realize we're the ones that help fund it?

Fun fact > The u.k spends about 39 billion on it's war budget each year which is enough to stop the NHS cuts twice.

Wow that's nuts. Here I thought it was only Russia and America that were really big on arms dealing. I was always under the impression that the UK was against fire arms. I guess that just proves how shut off Americans are to world fact. Thanks for the insight!

Wow .. never ever heard of that, not even in the big media outlooks, so obvs the government are not too keen on displaying this info to the general public.

If the general public known half the dealing of their governments, back room deals and the REAL policy matters, half of the world would be having a revolution.

China and France are also big on it. Japan unfortunately might also be entering the export market in the not so far future if I remember correctly.

The UK government is well known for arming and training antidemocratic parties, however.

Crazy! Guess I never paid much attention to that side of things. I know it's definitely one of Russia's biggest economic powers.

uh no. Although bush was was an ass hole, he never killed thousands of his own citizens. We were attacked the second time, so we had some valid reasons to beat the dog shit out of the Taliban. There is no fucking valid reason for Asad to kill his own countrymen in cold blood. Same goes for any other psychopathic regime to perform mass genocide. Although I don't agree with intervening in the situation with syria due to the fact that we shouldn't play sheriff of the world, doesn't make Asad a better person. Trying to make Asad look less evil than Bush is a really bad look.

The funniest part of this whole thing is that the GOP has absolutely no idea what to do. Most of the teabaggers will oppose Obama no matter what (because he's black), so they don't want to support this war, but at the same time, they have always had a sick infatuation with war, violence, and guns, so they do want to support it. It's like when an illegal immigrant wants to get an abortion, they just don't know what to do. It's hilarious!
