@ whoever said Maggie Iron Flange Thatcher- made me lol, nice

@ Elbe- well said

@ all the bollocks racism propaganda on Boris- it is all spun by Ken Livingstone's campaign team- not to say it is untrue but his campaigners have been hacking work mailing lists the last week or so and sending this email around in a very backhanded, sly manner- you'll know from your work if you have received one. No it doesn't make Boris any better, but doesn't reflect well on Ken either and by no means should you judge your vote solely on a couple of "private" remarks and opinions made by Boris, as Im sure Ken is just as bad.

I'm voting for green party, and not just to make a mockery of a supposed "democratic" vote. Yes i know they won't get in but if people actually voted democratically and voted for those who they personally thought had the most pros over cons, over trying to make their vote mean something in a popularist sense, perhaps the outcome would be more democratic.
straight...I hate the idea of voting for a party just to keep another party out, how can we expect our elected to be representitive of our democracy when people vote this way?

Also it make me feel sad as I see our politics becoming more of a slander and glitz show like the campaign runs in America, policies are what matter.

I like what you said, and yes it is true i shouldnt judge my vote on a few remarks but im NOT VOTING as i can't, and even if i could i wouldnt just vote for Boris because of his hair or a few things he has said. I think people have mis-interpreted me witch is my fault.

glad that's over- For a SNH, pretty full of Ronin in here

EDIT; @ soljachick it wasn't aimed at you just the general Boris racism propaganda that people seem to be lapping up over anything else.
And yes at Elbe, its a popularity contest more than anything- if I was an American, despite my democratic beliefs, I'd probably vote for McCain as both Democratic elects are jus throwing constant accusations, which makes them look pathetic (though Hilary moreso IMO)

its become a horribly large popularity contest ultimately, i'm hoping that people will remember/learn it is a different voting system and hopefully they will vote naturally rather than strategically

i hope the two vote thing works... I have been helping out the electoral commisssion and the amount of fukwits that think they can put the same name down twice is ridiculous. Going to be many spoilt ballots.

Since its my first year voting, I am not to 'up to scratch' with everything.. I mean I have read through all the campaigns and that and got a good idea who I wanna vote for..

So we can vote for 2 people???

you have a first and second choice, you do not have to vote for a second choice if you do not want to, your two choices (if you take both) must be different candidates

if you mark only a first choice your voteis counted, if you only mark a second choice then it counts as a spoiled ballot

if any candidate gets more than half of the first round votes, they have won, if no candidate does then the two who are ahead go into a second round whilst everyone else is eliminated, the eliminated ones papers are looked over and any second choice votes are added to the top two candidates scores

whoever has the highest combined first and second choice votes wins

Oh, that's decent, I was going to say it'd be worth protest voting if there wasn't such a high risk of handing the capital over to the Enemy, but with this system you can effectively say who you'd actually like to get in and then who you definitely wouldn't want getting in.

(The correct answers being not Ken and then Boris respectively.)

on local radio today i heard he has (or is trying to) ban bottled water?

although i think bottled water is one of the biggest successful scams in history (not to mention responsible for polluting the environment to no end through production/transportation of goods) - can the man really do that?

or is this just another rumour perpetuated by a dumb american politician?

Sounds like what you guys need is a proper libertarian/classical liberal presence in your central and local government campaigns.

That it campainging on LESS government interferance in your life, not more.

* Smaller Government
* Lower Taxes
* Less Regulation (i.e. stupid laws on smoking in bars, zoning, where you can run a gig etc)
* Wholesale reform of drug laws

etc

Here in NZ we have the libertarianz (not in parliament) and ACT www.act.org.nz or www.actoncampus.org.nz/blog (I write for this occasionally) .

When I look at the UK, it doesn't matter if its the left or the right wings of poliitics, all you ahve is more people wanting more of your income, wnating to tell you what to do and having more influence over your life.

Rather than just leaving you be, to make your own mistakes, and create your own successes.

(And yes I've run for local council over here at the last local govt elections, getting approx 30% of the vote here (It was multiple votes per electorate) on very little advertising etc

(I'm just all pissed off at getting my local rates bill, I'm 23 and managed to buy an old council flat, I'm currently subsidising housing for others who quite frankly have more disposable income than me, I've just been hit with a late payment bill of 10% of the rates, due to paying 1 day late. Only the public sector could get away with that sort of penalty regime...)

Arrrgh, fuck libertarianism, i like my national health service and the fact that we have a benefits system. I am in no way a fan of authoritarian government (unless it's being authoritarian against the right people) but seriously, less "government" (meaning public spending of money on things which should pretty much be guaranteed to everyone based on that whole "right to a decent standard of living" we all supposedly have), just means unrestricted capitalism, more freedom for those upstairs, and a lot less for the rest of us.

I know it's not quite the same thing, but look at what neoliberalism did to south america, the states and the uk under old ironsnatch, in fact her legacy is being carried on as we start to see the old nationalised services being dismantled. This ideology that we are all 100% responsible for ourselves is what is going to lead to the NHS being dismantled, public services being privatised and ultimately worse inequality than we have now.

Socialist rant over, but rather boris than a libertarian

So how did the voting go for everyone? Any info on when we find out who won?

Apparently it's odd to talk about who you voted for, but i will,

Ken for first choice, Left List for second, Left List again on one, and spoiled my other ballot cos i didn't really agree with any of them and wasn't prepared to vote for someone just because there was a box that needed filling.
