lol Reso you might not have been aware that once you volunteer yourself to do a Q and A, the forum lays full claim to your life 24/7 and you're not even allowed to take more than one piss break per hour. If you don't maintain a constant stream of posts for any time, the forum body will assume you to be dead.

Hey Reso,
I've just started producing so my main question would be about synth-building and layering(As i'm quite shit at that side I focus more on my drums and theyre sounding pretty good so far)
1. Do you work with alot of pads and if so do you build them yourself? I like my atmosphere and soundscapes so what would your advice be on VST's and/or combinations of how to build a synth/pad that does what you want it do(ie. covering mid-range and top range) Would you split it into three channels using say Kontact? Or would you layer the notes in the voicing window?
2. My top end seems a bit cluttered at the moment, would you sidechain your synth or pad to your snare so it ducks through just a tiny bit or would you leave that for the mixdown and try to eq it?
3. When mastering your track, do you use ozone presets and tweak it yourself(like ive just discovered haha) or would you do it from scratch.
Sorry about the simple questions, I'm just trying to get a grip on how producers get that "polished off but punchy" sound

Right! There seems to be a few questions asking the same thing so here goes:
1. My influences: I'm sure i said this earlier but just to clarify, i listen to LOTS OF DIFFERENT stuff as well as just going with my mood. Honestly i really can't be fucked to sit here and type 100 different artists.
Basically i don't listen to dubstep for inspiration, listen to anything else and try and incorperate that into a dubstep aesthetic. Capeesh?
2. Incidentals:
There's no quick way of dong this, basically somedays i'll sit there and make loads of different noises and fx, so white noise wooshes, lfo rises, random resampled bollocks that sounds cool. I've built my own sample library of sounds but i also use stuff from sample cd's as well.
Also i sample lots of stuff from video games, so say the sound of the dark beam from metroid prime 2 charging. Things like this make for great little fx to lob in to a tune.
In terms of actually putting them in a tune, i use the browser in logic and wack them in, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I really can't expand on this anymore, i do it in a trial and error sort of way.
I think the one thing you can learn from this Q&A is that IT TAKES ME FUCKING AGES AND AGES AND AGES TO MAKE A TUNE.

sample delay was previously mentioned in this thread, but i'm not exactly sure what that is. is it basically just moving the audio track for a few milliseconds? do you do this by hand or use an fx tool?

Sample delay is a delay plugin in Logic

Don't know how much longer you intend to do this QNA so I wanna jump in another question before you go,
- Would you be able to give a brief explanation behind the production of "Technitium", workflow on the track, how long it took?
- Also what inspired you to write the track? and do you have any plans to write anything in a similar style in the future?
- I can only find a 3 minutes version of the track available to buy, is there a full version knocking about anywhere or is that the length of the song?
Nice one for hanging in this thread and sharing some top class production tips with the rest of us!

anyway, here's another one for reso. two actually, both regarding the epic buildup of otacon.
- at 0:54 or something like that, a kick slams in and after that moment everything sounds like it's being sucked into a turbine of a jet plane preparing for takeoff. did you use some eq to achieve that effect or is it just those white noise and synth buildups in the background that are making it sound so mad?
- the japanse dude yelling something like oraoraoraoraaaa over the drumroll just before the drop, which anime does he come from? those final few seconds of the buildup are breaking the barriers of intensity in music, i must add.

Do you find yourself working for a while until you feel done for that revision and then come back to it days, weeks, months later (which I find myself doing a lot sometimes)? Or do you also find yourself sometimes focusing + working revision sessions on one song for days/weeks/months straight?

big up reso for answering all those questions, i was wondering if you (or anyone else) could tell me how you made the 'Ooww' sound when the track 'technetium' drops at 00.46. ive been trying for a while but havnt seem to have been sucessful. Doesnt have to sound the same, i just wanna know the technique. cheers!
