Because one is easy, and has returns (call it the way you want, local fame/credit/success/swag...) within few months.
The other is long, and the result of years spent on week nights at 2 AM tweating a fucking snare drum to make it perfect.

And given that 90% of the population thinks a DJ is "making music" live, I think it's great to clarify, classify and differenciate people between the bros with the serato gaze and beats by Dre from the producers working hard just by passion, without expecting anything back.

Anyway, this rageful rant is way off topic.

I do a little bit of both and I've gotta say while there are some DJ:s who are really talented, I still think that DJ:ing is more of a glorified party trick than it is an art form like music. Both require skill but it's like comparing a master painter to someone who's pretty good at card tricks for me, I think production is a lot more impressive even though I really enjoy a good DJ as well.
