pisstake, perhaps. i just get aggravated by conversation about this-or-that monitor and that-and-this soundproofing methods especially in home studios and very especially as regards neighbors in apartment buildings.

Headphones or if you are like me and don't like to use headphones all the time you look for a place to live where you can get away with it.

i have some Auralex isolation pads under my monitors, they keep the bass vibration/resonance from going through my desk and walls pretty well at reasonable volume...but not completely by any means. you might also just get some acoustic foam to put up on the walls but that will not completely sound proof the room

the best piece of advice is to try to figure out when your neighbors will be out and blast your tunes then...or just use cans...ive been dealing with this situation for years. its pretty hard to get around unless you own your own house i'm afraid

i use headphones a lot but never rely solely on them. your mix can sound completely different on speakers than they did in the headphones...and not always in a good way...you have to remember that other people will most likely not be listening to your stuff in headphones as well...nevermind on monitors of any real quality.

ill do a good portion of a mix in headphones and then do the final tweaks through the monitors, etc etc

and this would be why i utterly rely on headphones.
even middle-ground (but still 'studio' quality) headphones will beat the shit out of people's car stereos, home stereos, shitty club pa's, etc.
you want truth when you are in the mix.
then when it sounds good in a good quality set of head-fi, your chances are pretty good that it'll sound good just about anywhere.
not Tuned to a specific club-type system, but just plain good, anywhere.
agreed though that you want to reference on as many speakers as you can.
but only After you've done all you can on as good a headset as you can afford.

You would be better of getting a really good set of headphones tbh.
that wouldn't be proofing that'd be diffusion and general acoustic treatment
soundproofing is a whole other beast, and a pain in the ass and pricey
