ive got a pair of KRK V6s, and they kick plenty of ass. I would say, regarding the alesis monitors, to get em and then use the rest of your budget for something else... like a sampler or... maybe a cool lil synth


just cos you have the money doenst mean you have to spend it.

in retrospect, i love my monitors, but i wish i hadn't spent $800 on the pair...

I personnaly own a pair of fostex PM-1 an they are very flat... and some people working in studios told meafter discovering these at my home that they were the best possible monitors under 1000€ and it's nice because they only cost around 500€ so I think it's a good deal... I love my Fostex, just check them if you can it's a good pair of monitors... and Fostex make also a sub that I haven't tried to be honnest but you seems to want it so...

I have the Samson Resolv 80a's and I think theyre great. Theres not tons of bass but you wont find that much bass in studio monitors without a sub. They are loud, and they have a very flat response with adjustable midrange for near-field vocal work.

i've got a pair of alesis monitor one mk2 passives and they sure are good value for money.
gotta admit i'm often in doubt when judging sub in my tracks, but the main reason for that is the characteristics of the room, a crucial thing to keep in mind. 600 quid's worth of monitors is useless if - like me - you're producing in an untreated living room.
more important is to know where to stand/sit when listening. sitting behind my desk, right in front of the speakers, i don't hear deep subs, but sitting back in my room i get a nice amount of bass (w/o having a subwoofer).

worth mentioning if you intend to make dubstep: the alesis monitors are known for their fairly low roll-off frequency. i believe - not sure - they're 'flat' until 43hz, below it gets less reliable.

I tried the Blue Sky 5.1 system when I worked at Medley Studios, and for the price they are alright. Wouldn´t by them myselves though.


DON´T buy the Alesis modelss, especially not the old ones.

Tannoys, like the KRKs, sounds quite different from the rest of the bunch. Try them, and you might like them. I´m not the biggest fan of Tannoys, but love KRKs.

I would go for a small Genelec setup (2nd hand).

ive got a pair of tannoy dc1s http://www.noteworthyaudio.co.uk/sensys%20dc1.jpg and a bk electronics subwoofer, although they are not monitors they sound really sick, proper huge bass and defined mid and highs, as such is there any point in me saving up to get some monitors? i could easily get some reveal 6s and the cheap tannoy sub....


also what exactly do i need to wire the output of my laptop into the monitors?? currently its pretty standard for me;

do they plug into an amp just like any other speakers??? i get confused by all this xlr business and all that...

hmm, you can probably replace the cones... dunno how much they are.

you may have fucked everything tho... if their broke, it wouldnt hurt to open em up, check the parts and price em out.

also, regarding KRK v6's, i found out that they sound the flattest at 95dB. may want to take that into consideration.

i also bought them new less than a year ago, so i could also go for the warranty with my story a little altered....

not really sure cos opening them would probs void the warranty
