you can convey any emotion with instrumentals before you go and taint it with lyrics

for me i would say its a tricky one without words. i think instrumentals can make you feel or exress root emotions very well but its hard to get accross the details.

like you could be sad coz you have just split up with your misses. Without words the track would say to you that the writter is sad, but the lirics would need to explain why.

or you can make a tack make you yearn for something by not resolving the melody line properly or something like that, but again lirics would need to say what the tune is yearning for.

however thats not a bad thing as if you just try to turn your emotions into sound the listener can apply there own meening and it might make the tune more personal to them.

I've had an erection without thinking about anything sexual. This wasn't really my point though of course love isn't in your penis (not the kind of love we're talking about anyway).

I'm just going to ignore the 'taint with lyrics' thing because that's obviously a personal preference.

If someone can convince me (find an example) that a piece of instrumental music that reflects a certain emotion for EVERY listener (or at least vast majority) then I'll change my mind.

I'm not denying that music can stir emotions in people (that's why I love it so much), but from my experience every listener feels something different. Every listener has a different perspective on every song.

Easy example is the commonly used major:happy and minor:sad. Some of the most uplifting and life-affirming music I have heard has been in a minor key. Obviously there are exceptions to every rule but I really feel there are too many exceptions to a rule like this to even class it as a rule in the first place.

Feel music, don't think music.

This is a fairly simplified but accurate synopsis of the subject material.

And just to add that thoughts can be generated by soundwaves as well as chemical and sensory stimuli.

Of course, but my point was that it was the thoughts that lead to the emotion, so it's essential to think about what you're doing, even sub-consciously, when making music triggering certain emotions, as opposed to just 'feeling music'...
Thoughts being generated by sound waves is the entire topic, in the OP I was basically asking peoples advice on how to trigger certain thoughts with certain sounds!
