i feel what you're saying man. as of late, to keep music fresh i've been listening to alot of bluegrass (gillian welch, emmylou harris, old crow medicine show)
i've also started to get back into some of the music that got me into electronic and shoegaze. been playing sigur ros, air (moon safari and virgin suicides!!!), portishead, and leftfield.
if you're bored with music at the moment, then dig into the past

I think a lot of genres have settled, both in electronica and the rest of music. From now on it seems like less innovation and more just playing with the formats that have been laid down. Luckily the scape of music is so broad I doubt I will ever be bored.
There are certainly times I wish it were different - that something like dubstep would come along and blow everyone away, but I think at this point it's really hard to come up with a distinct genre of electronica that would catch on. Though, I was pretty sure dubstep would never be popular around the world when I heard it - I just couldn't imagine a room full of people dancing to it, and now look.

hey Limb,
I have felt the same for a while (not 'completely' jaded, but just, slightly less interested I suppose). I seem to have lost the need to actively hunt down new material that I really love. However, I think that periods like this make me appreciate the occassional tracks/artists that really hit the spot (usually accidentally stumbled upon). Don't see it as a necessarily negative way to feel....
Listen to The XX!!

its probably because the "old" genres are getting extremely void of any soul
like funk bands as you mentioned...wheres the soul in duplicating a 30 year old genre..??
theres a whole world waiting to be introduced from the world of electronic music production as soon as the technology gets easier to implement in live instruments...and not just a mpc and sample triggering. true live electronic music will reach a depth unattainable from production
it will change music forever, i promise you
I LOVE the sound of this.. and man, I cant really wait. Really agreein with you

Drum'n'bass influenced Jazz?
what would you call it? Im sure its not jazzy/liquid funk?
who cares?
btw, its not som 16 bar theme then improvisation (which can be excellent still!)

limb wrote:Still got a lot of enthusuasm for dubstep but aside from that nothing seems to excite, at this point I think I've mined all of the genres I love, if I go see a little band somewhere I am always questioning why they even bother doing it, no originality, no heart in anything, chart music seemed to die in the nineties, there hasn't been a decent rock act since then either, jazz is just old black men in an elevator remembering him who played with him who made something good back then, reggae is deep in the third generation of self caricature. Funk and soul are a parade of backing bands waiting for lead singers. Hip hop went too formula.
Does anyone get what I'm saying? Is this too much of an emo post? Is there any life out there?
I caught myself downloading 500 country hits just to get the burst of something new. What's next classical, then opera then jump under a bus?
Does someone need a hug?

This one blew my mind so open that I'm still receptive to anything. 'Yeah right' as Jimi would say. The shit catapult thing was good.
