Not just you. Enjoyed the film but was disappointed having read the book first. Still a nice little tribute.

Here I disagree - I though District 9 was awesome

I read the book and it was alright, maybe the hype just made me expect too much.

Tell me about the fucking golf shoes! (Yeah, used that in one of me tunes, and the opening line: We were somewhere around Barstow, when the drugs began to take hold...)

Great film. Johnny Depp absolutely nails HST. Maybe a bit caricatured, but then again HST eventually became a caricature of himself.

Anyone ever seen the documentary "gonzo the life and work of dr. hunter s. thompson". Real good, narratted by Johnny Depp.

Also, "the naked lunch" is a great film about a writer in the depths of drug based insanity. I've watched it about 10 times and still don't really know what's going on.

As in the same Naked Lunch written by William Burroughs?

If so then my expectations will be silly high for that one - love that book

The very same, yes.

Haven't actually read the book yet though.

I can only imagine that the book would be even more of a headfuck.

Did he actually shoot his wife?

The book is indeed a headfuck - he has this 'collage' style of writing which makes it all a bit disorientating.

Yeah he really shot her...

He spent 13 days in jail before his brother came to Mexico City and bribed Mexican lawyers and officials to release Burroughs on bail while he awaited trial for the killing, which was ruled culpable homicide.

^^^ Holy crap!

Yeah, the film is very disorientating and full of very bizarre concepts, like a lecherous typewriter that turns into a beetle and gets Willam to pleasure the giant bumhole on it's back. Stuff like that.

Yeah, Naked Lunch is great in both forms... they're actually quite different, it's almost just like the movie was inspired by the book. Best use of models in a film... watch it now and it'll sum up exactly what we're missing out on by using CGI all the time... truly disturbing.

I saw the movie of Fear and Loathing before I'd read the book... so I really enjoyed it and then I reeeeaaaally enjoyed the book. Nice.

naked lunch the book, and the film, are completely fucking different,

fear and loathing the book, and the film, are almost completely the same,

I love all of them.

I thought Diss worked for vice magazine? Did I dream that? Was that someone else? That place crawls with shit dull writers wanking off to their hilarious drug fuelled escapades. For example today's lead story:

I am always arguing with stoners on how bored I was with this movie . You almost have to be a stoner/druggie to enjoy it, because honestly, as a movie it fucking sucks. No plot, 2 hours of people yelling, and trying to justify the coolness of acid and pills. The only way I can see anyone enjoying it is to be fucked up while watching it. I was bored out of my mind when I saw it initially. Almost as bad as "Inland Empire" but not that bad. Let the flame comense.
