GarageBand is probably fine for learning the basics of sequencing, but I had a play with it on a mate's MacBook Pro a year or so ago and it absolutely blew goats compared to everything else I've seen on the market.

I'd get a proper DAW, even if it's just FL... it'll be waaaayyy better than GarageBand.

I love when people post questions that I have, saves so much work. Thanks for all the suggestions for DAWs, I'm making all my sounds in a class in school with GB, but I'm looking to get something on my personal computer at home, any suggestions that are nice and cheap for Windows?

Regardless - as for your question about Garageband, *YES* I suppose you could use it for Dubstep or House or DnB or whatever... If one is creative enough, then it doesn't matter the tools. However, personally, I find GB to get in the way more than it assists the music-making process. More than any debate about which DAW is king, the best way to get started is to just pick one and spend hundreds of hours with it. Learn it inside out and you should be able to do whatever you want with it.

True, I just feel that Macs are so simple it's frustrating, plus I have issues with iTunes, Zune takes all.

That's actually a good way of looking at it. And probably a philosophy if you get down to it, do you see the glass half empty or half full? hahaha

I've used cubase, live, logic, reason.. all for extended periods of time. Renoise is the best for my workflow, its cheap as hell, and now would be the best time for you to properly wrap your head around it, as you're not completely programmed to think horizontally instead of vertically.

that being said, it's sad that people are dissing this kid, as he only wants to learn and doesnt seem like he's taking the piss.

i use renoise, reaktor, a copious amount of samples, massive, Sibelius (yeah, notation ftw!), as well as a smattering of plug ins. the Togu Audio Line plugs are fucking KILLER, and they're free. get em now. especially TAL tube

then its just a matter of sitting down and learning your craft. I recommend buying everything you use, not JUST to support the software companies that make the toys you love, but because by purchasing the stuff, you're making a real commitment to yourself to learn this shit. I can't tell you how much i've learned from Reaktor and max/MSP because i forced myself to learn them, for the very sake of justifying my purchase of them!

oh yeah, max/msp too.. that shit'll kill ya tho!

3 different GarageBand synth presets with some low pass filtering + compressors: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5363589/filthy% ... 28kbps.mp3. You can make 'filthy' sounds in less than a minute easily, but if you want good sound quality then use another DAW or third party plugins.

I work in garageband. It has a lot of great features, believe me. U just have to find em and master ur skills with it. It's not as easy and simple as the program might look at first sight, it is actually quite hard to master. but if ur curious, check some of the tunes on my soundcloud:

I basically mess with the settings of the analog mono synth, and i use automatic filter to achieve the wobble.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely look into Logic.

Logic, Ableton, Reaper, LMMS and FL Studio are all VERY good options. LMMS is free, but difficult to work with. If you want to use FL Studio or LMMS you will need to run windows on your mac (using bootcamp or parallels or virtual machines). I don't know why people hate on garage band...dont know why they hate on FL studio or reason or reaper or any of them. They all do the same thing, u just need to learn your way around yours.

The glass is neither half empty or half full, its twice as big as it needs to be.
