yeah what plastician said but also so important to play tunes in keeping with the philosophy and ethos of the event - i know from putting on nights there's nothing worse than having a warm up dj go too hard/deep and alienating the crowd when they're just supposed to be getting the vibe going! good luck with it

I personally never understood the concept of a warm-up slot. Yes, you'd expect the headliners to blow of the roof. But a warm-up dj shouldn't hold back as far as I'm concerned. From the moment I enter a party I wanna go apeshit. It doesn't matter wether it's the local heroes or an established DJ doing the warm up slots. A party should start when you enter the building and stop when you're back in bed the next morning.
Of course rinsing out all the headliners tracks and popping anthem after anthem at 11.30 pm is not the way to go. But you shouldn't hold back either!

Just because you can't play all the big tunes from the moment (which I suppose you would leave to the so called headliner depending on that persons style) I think a warm-up DJ should still go for as big of a set as possible. Just rinse out some of the older big tunes (DMZ, Skream, old distance, anything from the dubstep allstars 5 album ). But yeah if you like to stick to a certain style you should try and add your own influence into the set. (personally I wanna stick in the odd SYNKRO track or something else on a garage tip)
And than just pray that it goes well so you can mix in more of that style. But you can never please everyone in the end...

Liquid is a commercial venue so the majority of people there will be commercial music followers. I'd say vary the style between a mix of funky, garage (down south Liquid crowds love a bit of UKG anyway) some of the more accessable dubstep stuff and possibly a bit of d'n'b towards the end?

Being able to conduct a proper warm up is the true test of DJ in my opinion. You have to have a great understanding of the music you play and a strong ability to read a crowd, particually if you've never been to the night before.

Keep your options open as to what to play, keep it funky/dubby/musical and accessable and don't rinse the system out from the word go - build the volume up as the crowd builds or you'll scare people off the floor. Always take a few records that are ok to play to an empty room just in case (you never know) and don't worry about doing really long deep mixes because people arn't interested at that time of night. Just concentrate on playing great music and doing simple mixes that create a rhythm that people can hook on to and get involved. Don't get wasted but do make sure you have a good time. Turning up early to check out the setup and make sure the monitoring/needles/mixer are functioning correctly is also highly recommended.

I don't agree with going for it from the off, too many dubstep nights go this way and it doesn't create a great vibe in my opinion. For me expertly building up a the anticipation in a crowd for the headliner to smash it is one of the most satisfying a things I can do as a DJ. It is a task almost without thanks but gives me a great sense of personal satisfaction starting a memorable night in the best fashion.

yeah, me and pinot opened this and had to drop the doorly remixes and play some fidget bangers to get people on the dance floor.. after that they were reacting to pretty much anything!

i guess scuba technically warmed up for plastician when i saw them at the roxy in LA. he definitely 'educated' the crowd. i loved it immensely, but it wasn't bro-steppy enough for the crowd.

Just play a dutch hardcore set. Or a death metal set. That should get the crowd going.

Scuba is one of the best DJs I have seen.
