What are artist's rights like in India? Copyright, etc.?

as far as legit, major releases go, artists have very little recourse-- there's no PRS/ASCAP etc in India. though now that the $ available for pro songwriters via the various film industries, ads, etc is reaching parity w/ the west-- the rumblings are definitely occuring. Otherwise it's all front-end, you get paid x amount of dollars up front-- not dissimilar to the old stable days of studio 1, channel 1, on up to motown and stax.

session players and studios do get paid tho. There's tons and tons of work for good musicians-- especially in chennai and bombay.

...

we got such a response to this blog that we've been talking over how to share these goodies-- right now, I can't share any samples yet but we're trying to figure out a way to make our sounds/ridddims/home-brewed oddball percussion bits available to the public in 2010... like anything else, we'll want to do it really proper. I'll let u guys know first!

10 months later... an update!

Our LP, Triggers, is releasing on 11/9 :)

A ton of the instruments in these recording videos wound up being worked into a tune of ours, called "Steam."

Steam is available, FREE, at xlr8r.com.

what they're saying:

"There is no question Brooklyn duo Sub Swara has been at the forefront of US dubstep for the past three years. Since 2007, Sub Swara founders Dhuruva, Haj, and Sunder have played host to Mary Anne Hobbs, Poirer, and The Bug at their monthly club night, solidifying them first as tastemakers. Dhuruva and newcomer Sharma now make up the production chapter of what is Sub Swara, having released their first album, Coup d'Yah, to critical acclaim in 2008. The Sub Swara sound is never easily pinned down —the duo has done a wide swath of unofficial and official remix work for everyone from Mos Def to Balkan Beat Box, but dubstep is certainly in the foreground. That said, Sub Swara's second full-length Triggers, out November 9 on Low Motion Records, will showcase the duo's increasing interest in live instrumentation and collaboration - album guests include Dead Prez, Lyrics Born, Kendra Foster of Parliament Funkadelic, and even session horns from the Antibalas Afrobeat crew. "Steam" is taken from the album, and it's a thundering piece of percussive energy that brings to mind UK funky's drum love and kuduro's relentlessness, all before the track does an unexpected, albiet brief about-face into dubstep's familiar shuffle. "

Finally, I'm putting the finishing touches on the already-over-a-gigabyte-of-original-samples sample CD, which will be releasing on the same day; most likely digital download only (who needs cd's???). keep your eyes peeled @ subswara.com.

boh!
