just buy a cheapo network cable of a few meters, it does the trick over here!
& yes, you have to purchase it, although you can find some serious reductions on the interwebz, and it's really not that much...
like 5 euros/£ a month every year.

There's no way I could trail a cable from the living room, up two flights of stairs and across the landing to my bedroom.

you can run an ethernet cable between your xbox and your laptop and set it up so you can effectively use the laptop as a wireless router, i did this for a while in my old house and had no issues with it, think there's a few settings you have to tweak.
go onto google and type "using laptop for xbox live" and it should bring up a tutorial.

Yeah, ICS (internet connection sharing). My wireless card broke so was using my laptop as a wireless card, works fine and didnt need to change anything but dont know how well it'll work with the xbizzle
