Sidechaining is basically where you're setting up an effect whereby the bass output drops slightly every time the kick drum (or whatever else you want) hits. That way, the kick and the bass aren't competing so much for the same headroom in the mix. You hear it a lot on house/techno/electro tracks where it's used to get a pumping effect on the bassline.
basically what i said.

the above is correct but only describes a side chains most basic use ... side chaining is basically set to run on a sample channel when the sample is played and its level exceeds a certain threshold it triggers a midi event ... you can side chain lots of stuff ;0) my fav atm is side chaining the resonance and cutoff << u get some savage results with a bit of tinkering
to side chain ...
assign a sample to an fx channel (use a snare or bass drum for max effect)
add a fruity peak controller on the samples fx
link the peak on the peak controller to another effect or synth parameter
then tweak the peak controller till u get the desired effect ... when the drum hit is played the side chain kicks in
a basic use is to lower the bass volume on the kick hit but the possibilities are pretty much up to you
if you can automate it you can probably side chain it 2

Yeah but you can't do all that with the normal compressor now can you? or can you?

yo banana if you're still using fruity check out some videos for the peak controller, it's a powerful lil shit
heres a pretty general tutorial using the peak controller:

if you're using logic, you can use any audio source as a sidechain input for any synth, and thus have access to their modulators and filters. try it out.
I am pretty sure it is the same deal with Reason since version 1 but I never in my years using the program used it. I guess I can see where it might be useful. I don't know, can't try it out now with Live

Yes, basically you put a compressor on the sound you want to be sidechained.
Flip the rack, create a Spider Audio Merger/Splitter.
Route the thing that's going to trigger the sidechain in the first slot of the merger (usually a kick), connect the second channel of the merger to your master mixer, and connect the third merger channel to the sidechain in/out from the compression unit.
A cool thin as well is, remove the wires going to your mixer from merger channel 2. Now you will hear the compression hit in every time your trigger is active, but you won't hear the sample that is triggering it.

Try putting a reverb before the compressor on the bassline effects channel - the sidechain should then suck the reverb in and out of the mix when the kick hits

Time to get the manual out. I never ever use macro lol

didn't read the rest of the thread but here's my 2 cents:
Anything like an offbeat bass that you can tweak to have a very nice attack and hold to your liking. also you can set different frequencies to be cutoff at certain volumes. There's a lot more but that's what I use it for the most (offbeat basslines or maybe hi hats). OR you can sound like deadmau5

so i have this track im working on and ive set up a sidechain, only im not accustomed to what to 'look for' with sidechain compression. how should i go about initializing it and then bringing everything together? I think I have 'overcompressed' the sub as they say but I really have no idea. If anyone would be willing to take a listen and maybe give me some pointers on the sidechain that would be great. I'll just send you a 320 because soundcloud rapes subbass lines.

yes recently I have been changing my pads to predominantly wet reverb, and then sidechainging them with the kick - if the pad volume is low you get a really smooth, rythmic background. It's like colourful silence.

Wonderful tip. Thanks for the great input.

sidechain gating from a silenced track is very cool way to do stutters.

been getting well into sidechaining recently - ever since it became easy to do in cubase really.
sidechains to gates and filters are just as cool as sidechains to compressors. i love the fabfilter comp and filter for that.
does anyone know of any vst3 eq's where i can send a sidechain to the gain of various bands btw? i used to be able to do this in fruity with the peak controller, but i dont really use fl anymore, certainly not gonna bother bouncing stuff in and out just for that...
With ableton you can use sidechain compression by clicking on it in the compressor. However I don't know anything about sidechaining effects or filters? I don't know if ableton can do this...
Can anyone explain further or have a vid to demonstrate this technique with filters n such, instead of typical compressors ?

This thread gave me another face-palm... second of the day
side-chaining is definitely not restricted to just bass use. Thats what the most of people are saying on here. For example, you can use noise gates in side-chaining, using a hihat s/chain or key input for an oldskool trance gate effect.
Dont just use it on bass, and dont just trigger it with a klick drum. Get creative...

side chaining is the shit!!
Side chain everything!!! and anything
hats to kicks, more hats to those hats, snare delay to hats, your girlfriend to the snare, ice cream to pizza, sub bass to kicks, synth bleeps n blops to the sub, and the kick.
OH MY GOD JUST THE THOUGHT MAKES ME WANNA SIDECHAIN ALL OVERTHE PLACE <333
