Is that essentially the same as No Limit stuff?
Because I thought all that No Limit stuff was gash.
Having said that, that was in the days when my brain was underdeveloped and I actually thought Mos Def was intelligent.

not really. master p was boring as shit, imo. when baby got behind the production with cash money it really made everyone in the northeast step up and take notice, that the south was bringing big big beats.
also, no limit and cash money were big rivals at one time. this is pretty much spot on about their beef...

as far as region rap definitions; you can't really call all of the south "dirty south"
southern hip hop = atlanta (ATL, ludacris, outkast, etc), virginia (nerd, timbaland, missy) ,south carolina, north carolina
miami bass = florida (2live crew, etc)
dirty south = louisiana (new orleans, cash money, etc), missisippi, tennesee, texas
**one big misconception about no limit is that they're dirty south. master p is from california. no limit records started in oakland. they just happened to make southern influenced hip hop, and adopted the region so to speak.
that's why i say the originations of dirty dirty are cash money, and will always be them.

another thing you should know for reference. don't ever call public enemy or tribe called quest "moronic" in or around the state of new york. it might get dangerous for you, because chuck d is the man in these parts. so is qtip for that matter.

Goodie Mob. "whatchu really know about the Dirrrty south?"
Cee-Lo (.5 of Gnarles Barkley) is in Goodie mob. Check their first 2 albums.
Anything solo by Cee-lo (he has 2 solo albums out) both are AMAZING!
Cool Breeze - East Point's Greatest Hit
Clipse - Lord Willin'
A little different from some of the other stuff listed on this thread, but it's where the dirty south started. No Kool-Aid, just sugar water and mayonnaise sandwiches.

seckle wrote:dirty south was huge in america around the time when cash money was blowing up, so once they blew up and became millionaires the rest of the southern states took notice and went for a money grab. that's why 80% of 2000-2007 dirty south shit is the same ideas, put around slight variations in the hook.
the reall dirty south is not this guy...

he was part of the bandwagon'ers that all jumped in after cashmoney's success.
if you want really dirty south from the originators of it, i'd suggest getting the first few cash money albums below.

I agree with you seckle that cash money was integral to the development of rap in the "dirty south" . I disagree that the other states/people just jumped on a the bandwagon to "make money" and that 80% of it is crap.

i'm super critical of hip hop, because the genre just ate itself. too much versace, furs and champagne. the death of hip hop came when people stopped taking musical risks just to get a fat check and a new escalade.

I see where you are coming from seckle, i am disturbed by the emphasis on materialism at times - its symptomatic of our society -imo.
Sometimes i dig it as well -the materialism etc.. It's all a fantasy in a way. Like a movie or something. I gave up taking it very seriously a long time ago.
I am still very open minded about hip hop.
I am not very critical of it . Basically, this attitude is what allowed me to listen to hip hop back in 83 . Granted- i probably like some really crappy music - in your opinion( maybe- I can't read your mind) - but I like whats I like- I cant help it.
The argument over whether its dead or not, is an argument I never engage in.
So if u think its dead cool.
I ain't gonna change your mind!

ignorance is bliss.
i dont suppose i'd expect dnb/dub dudes to be rocking out to 'down for my ******' but its just good shit... every artist hits and misses. im starting to realize even the pop artists have gems... hating is a good way to spend the hours you arent doing shit yourself.
perhaps a new thread should start with great south / west coast tracks? i know i have a bunch.

when this came out it owned the whole summer.
juvenile -ha- cash money records.

the remix with jay z is sick too. probably the biggest tune from cash money besides "the block is hot"
