My soundcloud bio makes me look like a noob. Which I am, but that's besides the point, I don't need to reiterate the fact.
3rd person bios I'm not a fan of.

I've always been into music ever since I can remember, I used to get told off a lot when i was a kid for messing around with my parents hi-fi system esp the turntable, I started making electronic music when I was about 14/15 with some friends from school ... they all stopped and I carried on, and now im 27 and still making beats and tunes, I love DJing/MCing and also have been scratching years .... cant stop its habitual.
I hope you enjoy my music just as much as I do making it.
As well as making tunes i've also mc'd for dj's including Andy C, Shy FX, Ellis D, Nicky Blackmarket, Hazard, The Force, Benny and Aries, Heist, Dangerous D, Escape, Ratty, Pilgrim, Pace, Irah, Laze, Mystify, Shaolin and Nemasis ive also mc'd with Mc Illegal aka DJ EJ, Navigator, Five-0, Jaff, Hidro, Tempo, Biggie, Manikular, PM, Fraud, Clippa and many many more.
Please message me the link to any mixes you use my tracks in, other than that enjoy the music and keep out of trouble. ;0)

FSTZ began to reply to this message in third person on his lunch break. He has graduated college so this isn't a real problem for him. He, in fact quite enjoys writing in third person and hopes you are getting a kick out of this as well. FSTZ can be seen performing live next week at the SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas. When he is not making music or writing bio's on dubstep forum, he enjoys spending time with his cats and eating burritos. He does not care what kind of burrito... wrap some shit in a tortilla this motherfucker will eat it.

setspeed gets sent a lot of bios.
Third person bios don't really bother him, indeed they're pretty much the standard bio format really, but all he wants out of a bio is clear information quickly. He considers comedy bios to be almost the worst of the worst, partly because trying to wade through someone's thoughts on goats when you just want to know what labels they've released on lately is frustrating and tedious, but even more so because they're not usually actually funny. He has just remembered, however, that even worse than the comedy bio is the cutesy-wutesy shit ("i make music. some people people like it. sometimes they play it at their shows and other people dance") which makes the writer come across as a) retarded and b) a wanker, and still doesn't give the reader any information.
He does consider though, that the writer has to big themselves up to a degree, and as awkward as this may be, just needs to bite the bullet a little bit. Kind of like doing a CV when you write that you got a 2:1 from York and have extensive retail management experience even though you actually have never been to York and your only experience of paid employment is that time your dad paid you 50p to wash the dishes when you were 9.

Whats in a good bio?
Should a bio sent to labels differ from one sent to blogs? Promoters?
Should it be funny? Super detailed? Short and sweet?
As someone who writes for a blog, its rare I actually ask for a bio unless Im prepping a full blown interview and want some back story... Usually it would just be ask a few question like where your from n how long youve been at it before we cook something up though... Dealt with a few artists whos bios had to be tied into the act in a creative manner... ehem... Viral Lode... Then, we might need abit of help, but, those are rare creative examples that only the artist can do, chances are, your not one of them, and a bio on you should be pretty basic and center more around your music then you...
But, yeah, IDK, if they do quality promo they should have a few seconds to throw a paragraph out to appeal you to thier readers.

Whatever you do, don't write it yourself in 3rd person.

hah!
true story...
guy sent in a "demo" which was an email and a soundcloud link and I said
"I prefer download links so I can play your tunes on a system in the club or on the radio"
the guy sent the same thing back and said.. "I made the tunes downloadable"
I didn't respond to this character because if he doesn't have to common sense to NOT give away what someone is going to try to market and sell...
they are clearly not ready to be signed

I find the best thing to do is have a friend make one up for you. Give them a general outline of what you want it to say and have them say it in there own words. As long as they are generally okay at creative writing it should turn out good.

Mike Higbee was a simple young man trying to spread the word of the Book of Mormon when he picked the wrong house to preach at! The owner, a porn director named Dubstep, tells his henchmen to kill the guy at the door who interrupted their scene, but Mike fights off the guards with great skill, which impresses Dubstep so much that he offers Mike the lead role in the movie he's making at the moment: Deadly Habit, which is about a sex superhero who fights crime with his Mid Range Wobbles and Big Fat Subs, his sidekick. Mike, against his beliefs, takes the job so that he can pay for the wedding he plans for he and his fiancee, who he doesn't tell about his risque new acting job. However, when the movie becomes an amazing hit just about everywhere and he finds out that Big Fat Subs has created a real Mid Range Wobbles, Mike is in some serious hot water!
