I sat in front of him while he was doing this solo drum thing. Fuckin' one handed snare and tom rolls that were so freakin' tight and he had like 3 snares...
Wait, what were we talking about?

Some of those guys set up in real studios just to play solo'd hihat grooves, haha... pretty sweet way to doge out of quantization.
This is good stuff. Same applies for vocal lessons, a great way to get some clean and often pretty unique samples.
(nice tune by the way, I had to listen and see what your drums were like)
OMG man please dont judge my drums off those, heh... hit my soundcloud up. I went at that tune with a melody down n no plan at all for rhythm, heh... pretty bare, I feel like piling to much on can kill the vibes sometimes, lot more rhythm around if you look for it though, heh...
I never thought of vocal lessons though, thats good shit too man.
DEADLY SAID IT::: BUDDY RICH FTFW.

I do this a lot. Funk, soul, west african percussive shit. pretty standard.
If I was to narrow down one musician it would probably be Tony Allen.
Sometimes I'll go for the house/tech house kicks just cuz they're dope. But I have like 7-10 kicks that I always use and layer different shit on top, so this doesn't happen as often.
**was watching a 9th Wonder interview and homie was saying that a good number of the drum patterns on College Dropout were taken off of Dre's 2001. And I think it was Xxplosive specifically. Then they were just processed different. I'm trying to imagine some of the tunes off of that album (not gonna go through Youtube to check) and I'm having trouble seeing this, but supposedly this was publicly confirmed by Kanye himself. Still though, Two Words, Jesus Walks, and let's say Slow Jamz???? probably bullshit.
also remember hearing this Percee P tune produced by Madlib - Ghetto Rhyme Stories. Drums are definitely chopped from Reflection Eternal's The Blast. Crazy how he did that though.

Make one! It offers more flexibility... The effect the 80's snares where renowned for is called a "Gated Reverb". It's pretty simple to make, just take a long reverb, and gate it over the original snare. Then adjust settings of the gate to get the length of the tail right. Compress to make punchier.
Thanks for the video!

wherever. because i still make some stripped down sampled beats i still sample and dig quite a bit. even if i hear a sound in a modern rap song that i like i will grab it. i usually process the sound, maybe layer it and then just save it. i have a folder of drum sounds i've made and now i can just go to that whenever i start a song.

Just listen to music (presumeably you do anyway) and ALWAYS have in the back of your brain "could i sample this?" I've found almost all my samples this way, because as well as this as soon as i hear something i grab the nearest pen/my phone and write down/text myself the name of the song. This way next time i'm wirint music i have 2 or 3 songs to try sampling.

He played the club I used to work at back inna early 90's and I got to chat with him a little bit. Cool dude - dry, relaxed, very present.
In retrospect I should've recorded his soundcheck though.
