Yes essential imo.
essential eh? I noticed Skream has one and even the mysterious Zomby. found that kind of odd. wonder how many other big name producers are on there.
Pretty much everyone as far as I know. Some producers don't put public tunes up tho, kinda dumb.

I'm definitely a fan of Soundcloud. Far better than MySpace for sharing music and keeping up with everyone's new tunes. I don't think there's a problem with the "heavy tune bro" feedbacks, it's good to know you're on the right track. There has been a few reliability problems but I'm not too bothered, it seems to be getting more and more stable by the day and I know what it's like trying to keep on top of a rapidly growing site (nightmare).

Soundcloud is immense.

For it's cons it definitely has big pros.

I mean, posting a timed comment on the exact part you wish to comment on? Genius imo

However:

You should be able to hide the waveform.

And also there should be a dashboard with a breakdown of new comments, favouritings, downloads etc for your tracks in chronological order, instead of seeing it in the main box and then having to click each track individually to see the updated stats.

Still an awesome tool though. Much better than myspace, which is essentially more of a networking/promotional site rather than an actual decent display of your wares.

Why's that? seems like an odd request to me.

 Ever click on the stats button?
I pay for an account and get a more detailed view of comments plays all that jazz. Its well worth the £££ in my honest opinion. I even complained about the downtime to them once, threatened to take my music elsewhere and they gave me like 5 more hours of upload time :)
They really do care about the end users. Unlike say myspazz ware i dont think tom gives two shits if your unhappy.

1.) So you can concentrate on the music itself and not the structure, nine times out of ten I see myself watching the waveform and bracing myself for the drop rather than concentrating on the track itself and doing likewise.

2.) No, but you learn something new everyday.

Don't look at the waveform then, turn off monitor, open new tab or minimize the browser

soundcloud is quickly going the way of virb imo
just buy your own webhosting account and save everyone the trouble of compression waveforms etc

Yeah i finally decided to get one a couple of weeks back now and instantly loved it. I'm thinking about upgrading to a premium account 2bh as i'd love the advantage of replacing the audio files on my tracks which would help greatly when it comes to changing a mix etc. Perhaps the best thing about it though imo is the fact that you actually recieve genuine comments and feedback along with playing an active part in giving it out rather than it just being endless spam, such is myspace  lol.

In what way is it going virb? The problem with virb is no one uses it anymore whereas the user base for soundcloud is growing every day. Plus you can't embed Virb all the places that you can with soundcloud. I have my own webhosting but I still have soundcloud because let's face it people are fucking lazy and unless you stick a play button under their mouse pointer they will not listen.

I sort of see the view points on the waveform, but in my case at least, when I spend time on the internet I'm doing multiple things at once...7 tabs open and shit, I never watch the waveform when listening to tunes.

and how. soundcloud used to be so cool. still very useful, but i haven't had somebody give me advice/criticism on the player in ages, rather just on the forums. all i get on the player nowadays is of the sweet/nice tune variety, which is nice and all, but doesn't really help. soundcloud is slowly turning into myspace. i've generally stopped friending - i mean following- people.

It has it's pros yeah, but I hate myspace, so it's soundcloud all the way.

And as for self-hosting I hadn't really thought of that, but it would need to be a site which could embed the player.

only real downside i can see to soundcloud is that you can't change the order of tracks.

You cant re-arrange the order of the sets :(

I had to delete one and create on just to put it up top

Yeah that is sort of shit but when you're forced to have chronolgoical order it's not so bad cos people can find your latest tracks easily and plus see the progression you've made as a producer.
