Resampling is such a simple concept but one I didn't bother reading up on initially. Back2onett, when you mentioned it, I figured "is it in the Dubstep Production Bible? Yes it is." Then I started messing around, following the steps, and eventually got a sound that was 87% similar to that stereotypical Excision/Datsik sound. I bet with practise I could get 100% the Datsik and Excision sound, but why go that route? Now that I know the "secret ingredient" for shaping Excision/Datsik basslines (resampling), it's simply time to deviate from that and see what original stuff I can come up with.

You know mate? Even Datsik said "Be original" and is trying to get away from the sounds he made so famous. Right now, I'm building up a collection of distortion plugins. I have the CMT Crusher and Frohmage and Camel Crusher. Nice ones indeed. Trying out some AcmeBarGig stuff. REALLY LOVE Voxengo Boogex. There are also some decent plugins in FL Studio (Blood Overdrive for instance and the waveshaper and Fast Distortion and Fruity Squeeze) I've never thought about before.

A good practise I discovered is putting Fruity Limiter in slot 8 of the synth's mixer channel right after crafting a sound within said synth. This way you can't accidentally damage your ears if, say, one of the distortion plugins is a little unstable and produces unexpected spikes (that and keeping the volume low).

Datsik also chops and splices his bass samples. That's another good practice!

I think one of the things I'll try to incorporate is a Nintendo-sounding pulse down low (hardly any bass content even if it's in the bass range) mixed with a triangle from an analogue synth for a bit of body. I hope Dubstep never becomes commercial! You can express any type of emotion with this genre if the tracks I heard from Beatport are any indication. Everything from clean to grit to meloncholy to exciting and everything in between! Datsik is more on the "exciting" side of things, but it's not appropriate if to have a thick wobble, say, you're trying to characterise a sad feeling.

different placement of your fx and filters in the signal chain will yield different results btw, especially when it comes to resampling. peep some of the doa q&a and stickied knowledge for where the guys like datsik and excision originally got the techniques from.

Slap a bitcrusher on any harmonic dark and low bass
then bring that bitch over to the Flanger house
and make the feed back relatively high
and raise and lower the intensity to get various different sounding bass noises

Now, this isn't really a "what plugins should I use" type thread...No, rather, this is a thread with one simple question, "What manner of plugins/outboard effects do Datsik and Excision use?"

Heh, hopefully now that you've discovered resampling you realize it's not about the plugins but what you're doin with them!

no matter what crazy shit people may tell you about re-sampling and bit crushing and effects and massive and filters,
the bottom line is that is NOT how they get that sound.

how would we know EXACTLY what they're using and when?
