Has anybody discussed solutions to help make it a friendlier and more helpful place? A forum I used to hang out on a lot comes to mind. http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/
That place is loaded with some of the smartest people I've met. EE types that KNOW sound. Learned a ton there. But, there is a short tolerance for things that don't benefit the knowledge base. There are, however, appropriate sub forums for OT, side project stuff, etc. Kind of like our dubs, finished works, musical sub-genre boards. The beginner board is the greatest idea they have. It's welcoming and forgiving of dumb questions. (how do i wobble?) The people that answer questions within that particular sub-forum know what to expect from beginners and they help more people get into the hobby/lifestyle/profession which benefits everyone. I could see a beginners production section really being useful as well as Sub production boards like the "Filth" board or the "Deep" board. Might help cut territorial BS as well as focusing specific knowledge about that type of production. Keeps subjects focused and people won't have to bitch as much. Just LET people talk about what they want and everyone's happy. I realize a reorganization is probably out of the question..... Just saying. Maybe we can just let some of the ideas influence how we take care of "our" place. It really sucks to hear that there are a lot of people lurking and fearing posting. That doesn't help the forum. Maybe one of those guys who doesn't post will learn some amazing technique or sound and never share it because they feel stupid about posting. We all miss out. And frankly, I want all of your secrets!

In all honesty this place is full of a bunch of elitist motherfuckers, their constant bashing of people trying to learn the way, the "brostep" haters, please cry more. and quite frankly with the lack of any real knowledge gain to be had on here Im not sure I want to post on this forum much anymore. Most people seem to be talknig shit and bitching instead of answering relevant questions etc... For instance I usually try at least to hold a civil conversation about an area of production that I want to know and that I don't think too many people have covered before and im lucky to get 2 or three responses, whereas some bullshit threads like that knowledge gravy on my tits has gone on for like 5 pages. Not much shit gets done here and the raging ego attitudes really piss me off for the most part.

Quiters never win. I am not going anywhere Ill help out where and when I can. I can actually think of a number of quality threads in the last fews weeks tbh you guys focus too much on the negative. I also agree that the grid is not a bad place to go, most of the drama stays on the main board.

I only signed up today and have read around on here, and I have to agree... There is some complete asshole behaviour on here. But on the question thing your right, in the time it takes someone to reply an insult or "use search function" they could have just been helpful and answered the question... Obviously they have nothing better to do if they take the time to reply with a jerkoff attitude...

We actually should be helping one another on here and if you are not in the helpful mood then dont reply to someones question just to run them down because people wont just sit there and let your insults go they will attack back and thus brings the entire community down.

Just either be helpful or dont reply...

haha i mean this is an internet forum, of course people are going to be assholes. but there's also a tremendous amount of knowledge here if you're willing to dig for it. and most of the guys here aren't so bad....usually everyone is more than willing to help you out if you upkeep your end of the bargain: namely, posting your song in the appropriate thread for feedback, and using the search before starting a new topic. with time you'll realize that shit gets old fast, and seeing the same topics pop up over and over when there's already threads on the first page covering said topic can be a lil frustrating to say the least.

in the time it takes to post a shitty response we could easily post a helpful response, but in the time it takes you to start a new thread about something thats been covered to death, you could use the search function and find multiple threads covering whatever it is you want to know.

we want you newcomers to take advantage of the wealth of information here, but if you're not going to help yourself and bother seeking out the information on your own, we're not always going to be happy about having to hold your hand and spoon feed you something that's easily found using a search.

You see that is the point, this is an open and free forum not a forum where someone with 200 or even 2000 posts can just sully into anothers question and act a dick. Yes it is an online forum and you will get jerks but the main point is a lot of those jerks seem to be more senior members with over 500 posts... So what the message is post over 500 and you can act a complete tool to who ever you like?

Ive read some 30 posts on here already and some are complete assholes that have took the time to reply to a question with an insult... If you dont want to answer the question piss off and dont bothering insulting people... IS THAT NOT A FAIR COMMENT TO MAKE?

I mean we should all be helping anyways, not playing our post count and acting like those with more posts know more than those who dont... That is the biggest mistake to make. And we should actually show more patience with each other, no wonder sites like MP3UNSIGNED are getting label owners attracted to it, cus they are not all dicks bitching at each other..

If you owned a label and wanted to sign someone would you sign someone with good music and was a good helpful person? or would you sign a complete tool who is very unhelpful and offensive to other people but his music was good? it would be option one - - because no label owner or agent wants to deal with some jerkoff who thinks they are someone cus they make good music, its bad for business...

You need to carry yourself and conduct yourself in a responsible fashion and not calling everyone names and making people seems stupid simply because they require some help.

It may be an internet forum but its about being social and not acting a twat because your sitting behind a computer where no one can knock your fucking lights out!!

In fact I'd say the useful:bullshit ratio here is better than most forums The only thing I really don't like about this place is the search function, I know it tends to get neglected but it is frustrating as hell when you're searching "How to make Excision style basslines" and you get a hundred results for "how" I personally don't find this a problem, especially since we have a dsf google now but if you're new here using the search function is a bitch

nah, the message is this: if you ask a stupid question without bothering to search on your own then you're going to get flamed. if you post your new tune in the wrong section (there's these threads at the top where you put your works for feedback) then you're going to get flamed. this doesn't mean that we're all assholes here and want to make you feel bad, we do it because it gets the message across fairly quickly. a good example of this is bananabomber. he was a new cat that joined not too long ago, and got flamed pretty hard his first couple posts. he QUICKLY learned where to ask for feedback and how to search shit on his own, which not only helps him, but also keeps the board tidy (imagine having to dig thru 100+ threads of people asking for feedback on their new tune). is he now using the forum effectively and making good tunes with what he's learned? definetly......is he taking all the flaming persoanlly and moping about how mean we are? no way.

i will agree with you that some of the dudes here are pretty uptight and pissy about what gets posted. but as long as you at least attempt a search before starting a new thread and post your new tunes in the feedback thread, you shouldn't have any problems here and you'll realize some of those dudes with 500+ posts are top notch guys and more than willing to help you out along your way.

I agree dude, and yeah I know there are some cool people on here. I do not doubt that... Id go as far as saying your one of the good guys like me. But If I see a question that has been asked for the 100th time I wouldnt go on there and attack someone... Its not in my nature to be aggressive unless I have been insulted first. I will however stand up for other people, I dont like people how they gang up on others and trade insulting remarks. Bullying does not fly with me. If I see someone being bullied or insulted where it is uncalled for, thats not right and I will say something. Thats how I am.

But I think your one of the good guys dude.

I just know there can be great people on here and we could actually make some good music together on here, collabs and so on some people would just quit being nasty and vile to others.

Lets work for the community, and actually make this a great site, something we can all be proud off. Dubstep is not that big a genre, its not that old... A lot of us on here are shaping that genre be proud of that and cut the BS!!

this is a tight nit group of talented producers who most of the time are more than willing to help you out so long as you help keep the board tidy by posting shit in the right sections and not starting a thread that could've been prevented and covered much more thoroughly (to your benefit) by using the search.

with that said, i will agree that some here have shitty attitudes that contribute less than positive vibes to this board, but really, that's to be expected as this is afterall, the internet. it's fucking complex. it's neither good or bad and is yet both at once. you have a complex group of people from all over the world and lets face it -- not everyone agrees or thinks alike. internet forums, as well as the internet in general should be taken with a grain of salt.

again, i realize there's an unwillingness to help a lot of newcomers most of the time. but so what. that doesn't take away from the vast amount of knowledge here if you search the archives. take what you need to make music and leave it at that if all the drama bothers you! you can't stand up for everyone all of the time, and certainly not on the internet.

and so long as you A.) post tunes you want feedback on in the feedback thread, and B.) ask legit questions, you will get good answers and realize this is a pretty good group.

if you've only been observing this forum for a day you do have a limited perspective, no matter how accurate it may be.

my point is, you can't make everyone be good or friendly all the time, and there's no use getting all worked up over it or trying to control it. if it bothers you that much it's as simple as this: disregard the drama and take what's useful from the forum or leave. you do not have to read this forum nor do you have to be affected by the contents herein. just take whats useful. i agree that if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all (although it is pretty funny at times, and if everybody was nice all the time things would probably get pretty boring quickly) and yeah, it does suck that people around here would rather contribute bad vibes but again, it doesn't have to affect you, and you can still benefit from the rewards this forum has to offer.
