Does anyone else find it interesting that some people don't utilize this technique (currently the poll shows 2 people don't)?

If you don't use this technique, is there a reason why? Is there a different approach to mixing or different school of thought?

Just curious.

Love the "started bathing and the rashes went away" such a good description.

uh...

mixing IS gain structure. everything else is just bells and whistles.

w/ that said, plenty of people don't "mix" their tunes and they sound great-- as they've got their own approach to it. but for 9 out of 10 people, keep track of your gains makes a world of difference.

What benefits would I see if I have the final output of the mix on say -3 or -6 over 0 db?

Lets you turn up something in the mix significantly without it going into the red and distorting. Otherwise you are constantly competing for space, I have a friend who prefers this though as it gives him a better idea of how loud or full the mix is.

Also -3db is good for a mastering engineer as it leaves space to work there magic

Some mastering engineers ask for you to send your final mixdown peaking at either -3db, or -6db

before I knew about it (the very idea of gain structure) I didn't use it. I just made my tracks, trying to make it sound good.
