Production wont earn you shit if you're asking these questions when you havent made any money yet
not the right attitude if you ask me
I think we all know it won't be the main job in many of our lives. I won some headphones

You have to gig a fair bit to make a living from music these days, game has changed.

i am aware of that
i get less gigs year-on-year too.
i'm on course to release about 40 - 50 tracks this year under various names, including 2 albums. if that doesn't start getting me some gigs i don't know what will!

Nothing, add in the hardware and software I've bought and I'm somewhere near the minus thousand pound mark.

One good thing about today is that you don't have to spend as much on performance costs. 5/10 dubplates a week would kill ya right now. Or even just vinyl.

Depends how you view it really. If you see it as a hobby and something you enjoy doing on a daily basis then its definitely a lot more rewarding and productive than spending the same on a PS3 and a shit ton of games which can also be seen as £800 down. With music there is always the opportunity of going on to bigger and better things down the line.
We buy software/hardware for the love of doing it in the same way someone who loves playing golf pays over a Grand for a decent set of clubs and a membership at a local course

the last statement I got showed that the release in question had managed to lose £8 in between June and December last year
