i'd look to slow it right down & clear it anyway with the first tune, then you can start from scratch with your 2nd tune. If you start hard you'll feel you only have to keep it up to keep the crowd

For sure I'm gonna play exactly what I want but I thought this would be a good chance to show some peeps some different music.

if I clear the floor they are just gonna hate it on it for ages - would rather start heavy and move into the groove later on then just wipe the floor.

I'm not hard up for bookings at all, i wanna play this one cos it's a big thing them asking for someone to play house/funky.

In that situation I always play Bassjackers-Klambu at 140 then slowly bring the pitch down to a halt then bring back at original tempo for the 'drop'

Failing that, play a Prince tune to reset their minds then drop Funky shit after that

I would say defo start with a wobbler like Fis T - Night Hunter.

You should look into some dutch house. I don't really like (most) of it but it should do the trick for you. Like Dubstep, Dutch House features build ups and big drops that most bonafide UK Funky tracks don't have.

Check artists like Afrojack, Senta, French Fries.

Start with that actually.

But nah, honestly, got a hard task there mate, just do what you do innit, might be suprised, people actually getting down for something with some groove to it.

i hope i don't sound like a pretentious dickhead but if i'm DJ'ing i'm playing music that I like. Never have I, never will I play music which I think other people will like just for the sake of it. I trust my own judgement and know who I'm playing music for. If those people aren't in the crowd on that particular night then so be it, thats life.. i'm not gonna change who i am for anyone and that includes the music I play. I'm happy if just one or two people are feeling the set.. it doesn't matter to me if the dance floor is ram. Obviously its great to see a large group of people feeling the set, but you will only get that at very select parties. Chances are if you are on the bill with a tearout DJ you are gonna have to decide whether you want to diminsh your own integrity as a DJ and play stuff which you aren't feeling or just be yourself 100% and hope that you bring a few people round to a new sound. Better to be a pioneer that just another DJ playing the same boring set as the next guy.

i think this is a really really good advice...
to play something completly different than the tunes before .. like a ambient tune, hip hop tune .. donno... anything "weird" works good for me in this situations ... doing so , you smashing lots of expectations in the crowd. and "open" the doors
for me - 2nd tune should be a solid groover.. and 3rd tune should be something people can relate to .. can be a intrumental from a wellknown vocal tune .. or an wellknown accapella mixed with a funky / housy / broken tune...

work hard on the decks , try to mix fast but stay "correct", give them your energy, dont pose - but show them that your are into the music...
if you gonna be authentic about what you are doing .. at least some people will like it! (if not they really are ignorant stupid di**heads haha)
