I've always thought of Indie as a lazy mans term.

It started as a name for independent bands as in they were on independent labels and then it gradually turned into a fashion statement.

Most tags refer to a culture since people will and do build cultures round anything.

Indie seems to be used as a very general term to cover anything with guitars now that isn't metal or another obvious genre.

hmm people usually have a problem with genre tags being too specific, not when they're too broad

personally i call it rock, and rock music that is very experimental will be noise or drone

Yeah. It's a sad state of affairs.

I wouldn't say being a hipster is all about the image. You can make you art look good and care about the way you look and still not like a hipster.

Hipsters tend to make bad music and just jump on bandwagons whenever they pop up. Look what happened to the UK hardcore scene recently. Its slowly happening to dubstep and its happened to a lot of 'indie' genres like lo-fi.

i agree but how is calling something rock music getting in the way its just like calling something electronic music, doesnt get in the way at all its really vague i dont see why you would have a problem with it.

My problem is that it doesn't need a name. As soon as you give something a name you're imposing on it and limiting it and taking attention off the music. There's no need for it.

All this is a prime example. We've all just been discussing genres for a while. We could have just been listening to music, making music etc but our attention was on labelling it rather than the music itself.

People get so wrapped up in whether it's this or that they lose sight of the music. Look at people in the dubs section etc saying "am I making dubstep?" because they want to make the label not their own music. It just dilutes everything.

Leave it to the journalists to come up with names.

That's something good that's been coming out of music recently. A lot of things are so broad in their sound palettes that its almost impossible to pin a name on it. I say its pushing it calling a lot of producers dubstep, although they follow the rule of bass. What would you call a band like Forest Swords or Sun Araw? You could call it psychedelic but that's more a way something sounds then a specific genre.

a friend of mine bought me dagger paths on vinyl for my birthday without having heard it just because he liked the artwork.
i am so happy he did, i hadnt heard that mixtape until know and its incredible.
makes no difference what you call it,its just brilliant music

personally i dont think genres are a bad thing, things like labels are much worse. case in point hyperdub, i think most of the music on hyperdub is pretty mediocre but everyone seems to love the label.

the way artists dress box them in more than anything. do you think if sun araw wore an umbro tracksuit he would get the same type of people listening to his music? obviously not

genres are convenience, theyre a necessity you have to have them just like having an artist name is a necessity. sure you can bypass that, and you can bypass being boxed in by a genre if your music genuinely sounds new but that is rare these days

You need genres when you go on boomkat and want to refine your search. But its good to hear music that can't be fitting into genres. It shows something fresh and innovating. On the case of Hyperdub, I've always seen it as a very esoteric label, Kode9 can put out whatever he wants to be honest, it seems he's the targeted audience for the label anyway.

Only hipsters will care what a musician dresses like.

Forest swords are great.
Maybe you might like Sleigh Bells, but nah.. her voice pisses me off.

The term 'Indie' In the pop world just grates on me. I used to be proper into it, until I realised like 90% of the bands sounded the same.

I fucking love Bright Eyes ..!! Everyone knows them but hey..

I realize some of these might violate the rules of your recommendation: these aren't exactly new, and may be considered indie for all i know, but here goes anyway:

Emeralds - really great synth and guitar driven music to get lost in. very krauty and psychedelic.

Lucky Dragons - otherworldy electronic collage type stuff

Mi Ami - these guys fucking rock, and can be dubby at times

Broadcast - their new one "Broadcast and The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults Of The Radio Age" is extremely good.

Dead Meadow - these guys to me are like nirvana if they had been more into bongs, blacklights, and late sixties psych/seventies stoner rock. amazing band live, don't skip out if you ever get a chance to see them.

Brightblack Morning Light - Slow, Hazy psychedelic r&b from the Southern U.S.....one of my favorites

Ohneotrix Point Never - recently got into them. digging it very much.

bandshell can you hit a brother up with some forest swords links? I cant find torrents anywhere and their ep seems to be sold out.
