With Gtune just remember to wiggle the frequency knob around, dunno if it actually does anything, but sometimes gives you a note haah

Else get a mate round who can tell you what note it is just by listening (I want this skill!!)

used to use the waves autotune plugin so it would map all the notes out but haven't bothered with that since i found gtune.
