wheni lived in sydeny ( along time ago) i used to go to a place near Victria and Liverpool st's. Near the jewish museum. cant remember the name right now. a littel vague i know but the best i can come up with. this si like 10 years ago so im not sure if it would still be there.

If a DJ plays an awesome set with just virtualDJ and a mouse then that's fine with me, as long as it sounds good I don't really care when it comes to DJs.

Digital formats were always just a convenience to me but never a replacement for CDs/Vinyl (I know CDs are technically digital but you know what I mean), I just love going to a music shop and flicking through all the stuff, having a listen to it, checking out the cover art/inserts, that kind of thing has always been important to me and while I love my iPod to bits I'd much prefer to spin some wax or even just a CD instead.

But for me CDs are my favourite format just because it's a hard copy and it won't fade just by playing it, vinyl sounds great, feels great and generally is great but the thought of paying £10 on an LP only to be rendered useless after excessive playing just pisses me off, So CDs are always my priority to buy followed by vinyl (always rip it to WAV on the first play) and then the rest...

I always get really excited when I find a new record shop, or im flicking through the selection at my local, what goodies might i find?

I remember last year I was just curising around town casually walking to waste some time, came across a nice (what I thought was a clothes shop), went upstairs and it was wall to wall vinyl. I was like a kid in toys r us.

Never got excited buying a mp3.

Vinyl is....

Expensive, takes up loads of space, a bastard to lug around and a absolute drag when you get a bad pressin' (even if the labels are bubbley)


But yet I still DJ it..

I WILL use a CDJ if there is the chance when playing out but the majority of my sets consisit of vinyl just because its actually fun! Vinyl DJing is a life style, you walk into a vinyl shop and browse through the stacks and stacks of tunes they have, speak to the person behind the counter, if you go in on the regular they will know what kind of tunes you're lookin' for and instantly grab 5-6 tunes you will probably buy..

For instance, I went up to BMsoho last week.. Had a quick look at the sale section, then said to Miss Pink. "I'm looking for a few more up beat tunes but not robot chainsaw stuff, I just want to bring some happy, dancey vibes to my set" I instantly got 8 tunes put into the box beside me, listening to them they was EXACTLY what was I thinking of and I ended up buying 6 out of the 8..I can spend a day just going up Berwick Street and listening to tunes, go for some munch and come home and I feel like I have had a successful day of living, even if I don't buy anything..Whos ever enjoyed sittin' on digital-tunes or Beatport(whatever retailer you use) for multiple hours listening to tunes!

And this is JUST dubstep DJing..I could speak for hours how exciting it is crate digging and listening to random vinyls!

Vinyl, to me is just the perfect medium cause its a life style as well as a format.

It may be dying in terms of the world-wide scene of DJing because really.. a laptop, external hard drive and a controller weighs less than 15-20 vinyl (probably) and you could have thousands of tunes when playing out so every set you do will have new tunes in it but its just not my cuppa tea. The only time I agree with myself to do digital mixing is when I am doing mixes to showcase other peoples tracks what are not on vinyl and thats usually done at home.

Vinyl culture remains strong in the UK. There are 4 shops selling vinyl on one street in Manchester, for example.

After you add it up, a 12" records only costs about $2 each. Once you have manufacturing in a row & can manage distribution... why not ? The only other tricks would be to consistently get good material & exposure.

i agree with you about sets with no laptop involved, i hate seeing someone spinning and half of the time is spent staring at their screen. but is there really much of a difference between seeing someone spin vinyl only or spin on CDJs, aside from seeing him a flip a record every now and then?

It takes no more skill to mix the wax then it does the digital mediums if your not hitting the damn sync buttons.

I hat ehow digital gets a rep as being easy when its really the same exact thing...

The sync button might be legit if you were just a casual wedding or church Dj. If Elton John were Djing and using the sync button, i wouldnt complain.

Its easy to talk shit about the Mp3s and software. Most of it is questionable but there are occasions when cheating a little bit is just a matter of circumstance, utility, need or style.

Vinyl is just way more exciting



Found this baby in a thrift store a while ago. Didn't know what it was, didn't know how it would sound, but that's part of the fun. Cover looks sweet too. Took it home, listened to it and was pleasantly surprised. You don't get that with MP3s...

Gives me a thought. Maybe we should though, maybe we should have a thrift store filled with old, odd discarded mp3's (with foot prints right across them).
