grime and hip hop mainly. also bits of bashment and rnb...
slowly moved onto more dance music and it was only natural to find dubstep.
its pretty jokes tho when i think back to the those times before and i remember i used to have so many new hip hop mixtapes, like a new one every day or so. used to have all the new tunes before a lot of people but now im completely clueless on hip hop tunes lol. when i meet friends who are still onto all of that its all new to me, completely out of the loop.
i didnt suddenly decide to stop listening to the mixtapes, it was more of a gradual thing. i started finding that the tunes i was hearing just seemed to sound recycled and formulaic (and even when i hear new stuff from friends its still a bit like that), whereas the dubstep i was listening to was a really fresh sound.

These plus 60s pop, psychedelica, 70s rock/metal and folk... dubstep just had the 'sound' to me, big liquid bass mmm though trippy drugs might have influenced that opinion (I didn't 'get' Midnight Request Line until I heard it pilled up lmao I did like other dubstep at the time though)

definitely one of the best dance albums ever, the production is incredible and not many things have bettered it production-wise.
as for what i did before dubstep, practically the same thing i do now.

isn't it, everything is just so crisply done along with having so much heart+soul dripping through it all.

Grew up with jazz and R&B (dad used to play drums so his record collection is pretty good)...
then Michael Jackson / Madness / other chart stuff of the 80s,
then rock / indie (Nirvana / MBV / Sonic Youth),
then house, techno, ambient,
then hardcore, jungle and dub / roots,
then UK garage and breakcore (ideally not at the same time),
then whatever Kode 9 / Pinch / Loefah's doing this week.
Still like all of the above, when I'm in the right mood.

All the music I still like, even after I got into dubstep. I'm a massive Nine Inch Nails fan, Boards of Canada a very close second, love DJ Shadow's early work, dug a lotta liquid DnB, dabbled with French House (Alan Braxe "The Upper Cuts" I regularly rinsed as the sun started coming out this year), Jubilee, Lee Perry and Augustus Pablo were firm favourites during 2008 for me when I got into Dub, David Bowie (I'd reccomend "Low" to any young geez getting to grips with adult life), Tool, Primal Scream, The Vines, Roots Manuva, Saul Williams, The Chemical Brothers' early material, Jamiroquai's first three albums, Pearl Jam, Mushroom Jazz... shitloads. Never got so attached to one genre before this though - with the exception of metal in my early teens.

I was into Punk & hardcore mostly but I always had a broad musical taste. Wasn't really into electronic music mainy cuz I never heard the good stuff just shitty mainstream techno & house that made me cringe. Started going to some parties with DJs because the punk & metal scene died due to no venue letting us use them anymore and the DJ scene was taking off. I met a dude who played me Pendulum - Tarantula and was fucking amazed and started going to more parties where my buddy would play drum and bass. Then he got hooked up with Skreamizm 1 vinyl and played the shit out of them. Thats when i got into dubstep. This was 2007. I still listen to a wide variety of tunes but dubstep is the number 1 right now.

Used to listen to loads of rock and indie. Guess it says it all that after 7 straight leeds fest yrs I am now skippin it for outlook. Just find it boring in comparison to dubstep now but I guess I listened to those genres for a lot more years, am sure I will return to them.
Also like a bit of rap / hip hop.
First albums I remember buying ... Offspring and Bewitched LOL.

I still listen to most everything I listened to before dubstep, just with more dubstep lol. I'm big on classic rock, mainly 60's and 70's rock like Rush, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, REO Speedwagon, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, etc. I was really into hip hop when I was younger, but I hate all the bullshit being produced today. I listened to Eminem, The Game, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent (first album ONLY), T.I., Lil Wyte, Ludacris, 2pac, Nas, etc. One of the very few modern day rock bands that I really fell in love with is Coheed and Cambria (progressive rock). I've seen them live like 6 times lol. As far as electronic music goes, Daft Punk probably got me started (like I'm sure Alive 2007 did for a lot of people my age), but I also started playing out MSTRKRFT, Deadmau5 (not so much a fan anymore...), The Digitalist, etc. This is when I first heard Caspa & Rusko's Fabriclive 37 (still one of my fav dubstep mixes). Now, here I am obsessing over producers/ DJs like Joker, Sukh Knight, Gemmy, 501, Mimosa, and Ginz. I found that my taste in dubstep grew picky REALLY fast and I only like about 25% of the mixes I actually get to listen to after looking at tracklistings lol.
