its as easy as downloading audacity, selecting stereo mix as your mic input, pressing play in whatever media player you want use, then pressing record in audacity. sooooooooo simple

but wouldnt you have to rip the whole dvd? plus stereo mix gives you a losless output to your recoring device. surely if you only wanted a sample of one part of the dvd audacity would be quicker? i may be wrong tho
on the one I have it comes up as chapters, each chapter on the dvd has a little check box, I just leave em all checked for every movie, even the trailers and interview extras etc, but you can press uncheck all and just click on the chapter you want, which will give you a little 5 min chunk. If you rip the whole thing you end up with 20 or so chunks of a simillar length. The output is lossless from whats going through it, but the levels arnt exact, you can clip and you can under play it too, it would be hard to get it exact, its nice not to have to think about levels etc and know youre getting it exactly as its coded on the disc db for db, point for point. But yeah, if you only want to sample one little snipet once in a blue moon its roundabouts and circles which method you chose.
But, Id urge people to try sampling the whole movie. The production comp on atm has like 3 needle drops on records and a few breaks as samples, and Im sure we will hear some monster tunes come out of even just a few little snips there. In a movie you have so many sounds, think how much you could make with just 1 movie, any full movie with sound, litterally. When you watch a movie as you sample it, it forces a context on all the sounds youre hearing. Sometimes I used to sample stuff, then when I had it as a wav its like damn, theres some horrid footsteps in it I didnt notice when I watched it. If someone closes a door youll hear a door being closed, but chances are the sound man on the movie didnt even sample a door but knocked a plank of wood against a wall 5 meters away from a mic or whatever to get that sound. When you cant even see whats going on you pay more attention to what you are hearing. Little percussive hits and shakes, melody from the score, voices, sound effects, random odd noises you cant even label, theres so much stuff in films to sample.

So what is the name of this program exactly (link???)? And is it compatible with Mac?

might be looking in the wrong place, but audacity doesn't seem to allow me to record audio playing from my comp. when i try to change the input( preferences >devices > recording > device: only lets me select built in input- and built in mic) and select a song in itunes or a youtube vid or some sort.
probably some ridiculously simple solution im overlooking, any help appreciated

Note: Generally, it is not the best policy to convert audio files to different formats or extract audio from CDs and DVDs by recording them as they play through your sound card. Recording off the sound card is a relatively inexact and lossy process, because it usually involves converting a digital source to analogue in order to play it, then back to digital when it enters the recording software. The quality of the result will depend amongst other things on the quality of your sound card's digital to analogue and analogue to digital converters.
That being said, 9 times out of 10, who gives a shit? Youtube rips for the win...
(It was seriously bugging me though. Peeps being all, "don't use youtube, introduce noise and reduce your sound quality THIS way")

If the cleanest samples possible are what you're going for, ripping right off the dvd is the cleanest method... Or for avi's, use a program like the one deadly recommended. I use magic video converter, which has a handy little convert avi to wav/mp3/what the fuck ever option...

Yeah yeah, yours looks better cuz it's one program. I have that functionality, but it's across three programs, magic dvd copier, magic video converter, and magic dvd ripper. Plus yours is free. However, I've not found anything that copies security protected movies, ALL security protected movies, like magic dvd copier. Shit is like magic...

But I've only ever tried it out on movies I own, you know, just for archiving purposes of course.

heaps of way to eat fish... dun really matter how ya catch it ah!!
OP-- you trying to get some dialogue? personally... I just use Audio hijack(mac) to record my soundcard & it saves as a wave 24bit.
I used to rip the whole movie using "cool edit pro" back in the day on the PC...
thats now Adobe Audition- so use that for that process if ya wish.
Then ya have that other option- record ya RCA outs into ya line in via a 1/8 jack adaptor.
whatever ya find easiest bro, DO IT!! but ripping from you tube, unless its HD... is a big pain in the ass sometimes.
although, sometimes its the only option!!

That Format Factory looks pretty good, but trying to rip a DVD to WAV files last night I found the audio had a load of weird artifacts and was unusable (and ripped it to 16 bit only, I guess that's the standard for DVD audio?) Anyone else had that??
Is there really much less of audio quality from just using audacity? Actually thinking about it there must be, as I can't use it with my Konnekt 24 so have to route it through the motherboard's built in audio interface which is not really audiophile quality. Arses...

i've never found any quality loss with using audacity, remember you can change quality settings in preferences. i'm not able to record the stereo mix with my audio interface either and it will only do it with the onboard soundcard but i think this has more to do with the "stereo mix" options and the way audio interfaces set themselves up in windows than audacity cos i experienced a similar issue with easy hi-q recorder.

One thing I've noticed is that when recording this way through Audacity, if I have no audio playing (ie the DVD on pause) there is a very slight amount of background noise. I guess if recording at 24-bit at a decent level it's probably not that much of an issue, but it would be better to rip straight from the DVD I think..

Correct sir. Like I mentioned above, recording from the soundcard is a lossy way to go.

So to sample movies do you need to have a microphone to record the audio, can't you record just off the computer? may sound stupid I'm quite new, also does the quality of the microphone effect the overall sound.
Also when sampling, whats the best audio files to sample from? flac? does audacity/recycle support these types of files? can you convert flac files? and does audacity have a time restriction.
Another thing.. where do you guys usually make your chops? at the second mark e.g 3sec-5sec etc and how do you place your samples in your daw and mend them together.
A lot of question from me, feeling a bit overwhelmed from the learning curve, been using recycle a lot. The trouble is, converting files is time consuming. Whats the best file converter?
And does anyone have any other tips/resources for sampling, to speed about the learning process

see the link i gave earlier to format factory, very user friendly
best format is wav as it's raw audio, flac is lossless, but encoded
chops yes by min:second.millisecond mark, generally leaving a couple for lead in and lead out in case i want to fade in/out when working with it
work with wav files and you'll have no problems going between different audio programs
again format factory will work fine for a user friendly converter
there really is no tips other than bobs your uncle and don't sample from the same genre you're producing, just make sure you're not clipping when recording, record the best quality you can bitrate wise and have a blast

yeah g very serious, btw thanks for pointing me in the right direction on getting song structure instead of looping.
Thanks deadlyhabit, gonna check that out now. Been doing some serious thread digging and piecing all the info in the forum about sampling, going to make a thread in a couple of days with a few questions and info i've gathered.
This is very messy but some of the topics i want to learn, still need to do a bit more research and piece it all together so I understand more. Such a step learning curve :<
Bassline Sampling
"Subs -> Compression, EQ
Lows -> Compression, EQ, Bitcrusher/Small amount of distortion
Everything else -> EQ, Bitcrusher/Lots of distortion/Phaser/Lots of movement etc."
How to get proper tempo, time stretching etc on samples
Bitcrushing?
Sampling at 105bpm
Using audacity to chop it up, then use recycle to get the points out etc
How to route individual channels in the nnxt
How to isolate sounds
Sampling Workflow
What to sample from?
DVD, CD, High quality audio files like flac, vinyl rips, how to keep the quality of the samples?
How to sample the files
Software to use - Audacity for and Recycle
File converter, convert audio files etc
Clean audio, isolate sounds, time stretching, keeping to tempo
Organising sample library?
Audition samples, daw
Loading samples into daw?
Reason 5/Record - NNXT sampling, external effects, cutting frequencies
DB/Bitrate, isolating low end, high end, bass
External effects - Reverb
Timestretching in reason and record

Pretty much all that is covered in the Production Bible. I was exactly where you were at not long ago. This forum is a goldmine, there are so many informative posts. Keep reading the forums and also there is a handy .pdf version of the production bible so you can print it and read it at home.

Im really curious about this too, i found a badass dialogue sample on netflix instant watch. So i can either play it on my computer or tv. Im trying to use audacity with the movie playing on my computer to record it, and i have a soundcard in my mixer which is hooked up with a usb port. Problem is i have to send the output of my computer through the card and then back into my computer to record. I can record the audio onto Serato Itch but im trying to use Audacity instead. Would the best thing just be to go with Itch or can you help me out with the other stuff?

when all else fails a simple patch cord from output to input works
