Whats everyones take on mainstream/chart dubstep? (Rusko - Hold on for example)

I believe its good in a way, as it's getting the genre more widespread, but I think its ruining the exclusivity of it all!

Suppose all good music has mainstream elements though?

Discuss.
are you crutex?

In the bay area dubstep is getting popular. One of my friends was telling me Borgore was his favorite because of "foes" but it turned out to be the 16 bit remix. Most people here like the filthy stuff so I burn a lot of CDs with it and throw in a few deeper tracks, everyone loves it. I'm glad it's gone a little mainstream.. maybe kids will turn in their iPods for subs and turntables. Then again.. it's only a matter of time before the big companies will be dubbing their ads in our songs.

It doesn't matter does it really? There's always going to be an underground. Look at Drum n Bass, Hip Hop etc

This.

We are constantly bombarded by media in our modern society, TV, Radio, Newspapers/Magazines, Internet. Whether someone wants to (or can) differentiate between marketing and opinion is their choice (or not). I think this is where the ultimate 'difference in the listener' lies, someone who wants (what they deem) good quality (Relevant, of high integrity, and unique/new) information will literally hang on every word of a trusted 'source' (be it a blog, a magazine column or a DJ set). You read names or hear a few tracks because you've been reading/listening to someone's blog/mix. And then you have, potentially, a new trusted source. Repeat. Then keep repeating it. Subconsciously.

Some people (all?) just don't think like that!

Think of how many new artists you've heard of and then started 'following' because you've heard a dub in a Skream/Coki/Who-ever floats your boat mix.

IF people want to look for music they can find it. It's really not hard, this is after all 'The Information Age'. But too many people don't realise that there is a whole wealth of creative talent out there, just under the surface. Or they just don't care.

Basically what I'm saying is 'People will do, what people do'. I'm not bothered about the mainstream, I know it's there, I know what's going on in it. But I won't let it influence my listening habits in any way. I have my own sources for that.

i think it all depends on the producers..

nothing comes strong enough against a good drum pattern, not even the most overproduced commercial whack track... its been proved many times.

hip hop got that part right at most point in its history... if the producers do their job... the people will respond.

so.. lets just all be really good at it

and also, educate the newcomers (like me)

It doesn't matter.

Dubstep has got bigger in every way since most forum members started listening to it. There are more people making it, more people listening to it. Some of these people are really pop fans who get off on big hooks wherever they come from. Some of them are mosh pit types who just like dirty, heavy sounds of all kinds. Some of them are people from a "deeper" electronica background. It's inevitable that as it gets bigger, there'll be more variety and less consensus.

As certain kinds of dubstep continue to cross over to the mainstream, it's more important than ever to have a forum like this - somewhere people can pick up on stuff that pushes them outside their comfort zones, and somewhere they can insult each others mums.

There will always be "fans" who hate "their" genre going mainstream because of the sake of it. In a way, it makes you feel more powerful when you know the background of a certain underground genre compared to the average joe - so there's always going to be idiots out there who have no logic in saying blanket statements like: "It's rubbish now it's mainstream".

I really liked Katy B's on a mission, had a good chilled vibe to it. It was quite soft but nonetheless it's harmless in "ruining" dubstep.
My personal view is that whatever happens will be for the best, and only slight complaint is cigarette indie kids jumping/killing it.

The only thing that really annoys me about it becoming "Mainstream" is. As a DJ you get requests for tunes that are "Mainstream". Now I know this is obviously going to happen. And it is a good thing that dubstep is getting to the ears of people who would have never listened to it or appreciated it before. But.......there is nothing worse than when ya rinsing some Mala, Guido, Macabre unit whatever. Then get requested for "in for the kill". Tell the punter politley "no sorry" And then get a reply of "And you call yaself a dubstep dj. If you were really into dubstep you would have that tune". This unfortunatley has happened on more than one occasion.

The new people coming into it only seem to wanna hear what they have already heard. So for alot of new fans they only wanna hear about 3 or 4 tunes that they know instead of opening their ears to the hundreds of thousands of awesome dubstep tunes and artists that are out on offer.

It shouldn't matter whether its mainstream or not as long as you like what your listening too. Everyone has their own style that they like more or less than others, so find what you like and don't worry about other people. The bigger it gets, the more artists there will be, so everyone will have something they like. Dubstep is expanding, I'm just sittin back and enjoying it how it is right now

Like others have said, it's no big deal. Mainstream dubstep is the popular kind, but the original dubstep style is still fairly underground. I've even had people tell me that artists such as Skream are not dubstep, which shows how little people even know about it's original sound.

Otherwise, the more the merrier!
spot on, u dont have to listen to the mainstream or generic synth screetch, but it does mean top names will have high booking fees.

skream+benga at leeds student union, i dont wana go, too expensive, and with benga on the mic saying wheres the moshers at i doubt ill enjoy it

i think its bad because mainstream music is for people who don't really care, and the majority of people are 'massive tools'
