wasn't a "chavvy" a cheeky little kid originally?

what fucks me off is people like Julie Burchill taking it to mean 'working class' rather than 'mooching antisocial tnuc'. she did a documentary on sky one that just consisted of the dozy bitch completely missing the point for an hour

I hate Julie Burchill's stupid whiny voice, most chavs would kick the shit out of her and mug her anyway so she needs to stfu!

Apparently chav is from a Romany word chavvo which simply means boy and this in turn comes from the Spanish phrase Chaval which also means young male! You learn suttin every day, maybe chavs and gypsies are related after all!

Yep Julie Burchill hasn't got a clue but then she did use to work for the NME and do lots of coke and lipstick lesbianism before she moved to pies

Now works for Rupe at the Times trying to be controversial

Burchill did though even though she rakes it in as a columnist

being middle class means when you're young u desperately want to be working class and when you're old you desperately want to be upper class. but you're just obscure old middle class.

Julie Burchill said all sorts of stuff when she had that column in the weekend, shes crazy. Also I remember there being another columnist in the weekend who said the word Chav was just another way to get at the working classes. Its all bollocks.

Infact there are a whole bunch of crazy writers in the weekend, like that lass whose eyes were deteriorating and she just wrote about how she hated her ex boyfriends. God bless The Guardian.

i've had a total mixed upbringing. for a start dad being working and mum being middle... so i've got both sets of values and sensibilities working in unison. and also when i was little we were very very very pov.

quote: "there are a a lot of Irish travellers on the Kingsmead estate"

Would that mean that they are ex-travellers then, living in permanent houses and that?

Regional words for Chav:-

Northern Ireland- Steek (came before chav), Spide, Smick, Milly (female steek, decades old, used to mean millworker)

Scotland- NED's (Non Educated Delinquents)

Manchester- Scally (traditionally meant football casual or troublemaker)

Used to think that it was a mainly an Irish thing but then went to Carlisle and saw it there, then it became a big thing in the media. Don't think the American White Trash comparison stands up well

Chavs are petty criminal and mooching class, not working class. Class and money should be completely separated. Class is behaviour, not cash.
