They're custom-built by a Swiss company (made by hand) and there are a limited amount of hang drums made per year so it's kind of a status symbol, collector's item and musical instrument rolled into one :3

Oh, I managed to get a hold of that Tonehammer sample pack mentioned on the previous page btw and was thoroughly disappointed :( Really not the kind of sound I was looking for, the tone isn't clear at all and it wasn't in the right scale (that I wanted at least) so I'll keep looking...

There is a free hang drum iPhone app, so I might be forced to record the line-out from my iPhone into Cubase or something, either sample the hits or just record the melody in :) If I manage to do that then I'll pack up the samples and post them here (since the app is free I reckon it should be cool to do that... I think lol) :D

No Basic is just looking at the price some dude on ebay has listed. Probably because of the fact that they are really rare and hard to find in the States. It sounds like you can only buy those from the company in person at their shop in Switzerland. You should hop in a car or train and head over there. But double check that they have some available, according to some website they weren't making any at all in 2009 and they don't make very many in general, hence their price. You have to be put on a waiting list but I heard the price should be about 1200 - 1500 Euros.

I just discovered these from this thread, and am surprised that I hadn't heard of them yet. I would love to play one of these. I play the Udu drum and it seems like one of these would fit my style.

None in stock, why I was quoting the Ebay price, only one I could find online for sale

Id really like to have a few minutes to get a good examination of one done... I know an old head here who makes steel drums and hand hammered cymbals for spare cash on the side of being a Blacksmith, Im sure he couldnt do perfect, but Id be willing to bet I could get one made...

Measurements arent gonna tell you much, you need to look at hammering technique, composition of the metal (hardest part because the company has some sort of treatment process for the steel they are guarding pretty heavily), ect.

Ahh yeah... Hmm, well how would you be able to tell what kind of metal/treatment is used by looking at it? Or is that the kind of natural talent-thing you learn how to do as a blacksmith?

Yeah, same principle (kinda) but different tone... HAPI drums have tabs cut into the metal that you tap/hit, whereas hang drums have pots or 'dings' to hit :)

btw Basic, I just looked on Wikipedia and apparently the hang drum is made from nitrided steel :) Check it out; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hang_(musical_instrument)

They are similar in the fact that they are tuned to a scale and made of steel, but different in the fact that Hapi's are cut and are modeled after cut log drums or wooden drums while the steel in hang drums are pounded like the traditional steel drums.

Edit: Dub Fiend beat me to it, but yeah.

If you tried to make one, I don't think the metals they used is going to be your main problem. The main problem I can see is the tuning, you will need to get all your tuning ratios work out, then be able to accurately machine/hammer them. With out the correct tunings it will be pretty useless, even with the best sounding materials.

A HAPI would be slightly easy to make as it's cut, and not hammared. So you can get a much better accuracy of the tunings, but you will still have to work out the tunings (length X width X depth of material x = pitch)

You should see what he can do. Even if he don't make you anything like a Hang, you could end up with a one off instrument, even more unique.

btw the poor man's DIY percussion ain't to bad...

Mmm, but, I can get things hammered with pretty good skill, thats what i was saying, makes steel pans already  but its a matter of getting a good view of the techniques used first.

And I saw the propane tank thing, its a Hapi, not a Hang.

It's still fucking sick though :P I'd happily have a HAPI if it was like that ;)

I went down to one of the local drum shops this afternoon, and wouldn't you know it, they had two Hapi's sitting right there so I got my hands on one today.

Just as I thought, it totally suits my style. Would love to get my hands on a hang drum but that's a long shot.
