i have no experience using distortion on a send rather than inserts. I'm assuming pre-fader would be best, which is why I haven't experimented -- Reason only offered one pre on its mixers. Now that i got a proper DAW, i will need to try out more using pre-fader sends. Any more hints/tips would be greatly appreciated, especially by way of distortion and compressors.

good stuff in here, thx.

pre fade is good if you don`t want the effects on the channel you`re sending to effect the signal on the return. for example say you want to frequency split a kick drum so you have a low end, but a top end to cut thru the mix....you could create an audio channel for a kick sample....place an eq on one of it`s inserts...then on the EQ create a bandpass between 65-and a little over 100hz (use your ears). then turning the prefade for that channel on....send the signal to a return that has a highpass eq/filter on it. now you could do the same thing to a snare and bandpass between 200-500hz but send it also to the same highpass as the kick drum....this can all just as easily be done and self contained within Kontakt by using groups in the mapping editor. but yeah prefade is usually your best bet, it also allows you to turn the fader for the original channel completely down while still being able to hear what is being sent say to a high pass etc.....this is fucking tits with drums and setting up layers of delay or reverb to give your overall mix a bit of depth.

discodsp highlife can load up a vst "freeze" it (actually creates samples) an lets you play it without using the vsti's resources.
Nice for reaper users, who are missing a descent freeze function.
