Ahhhhh - iTunes' famous sound enhancer.

Turn it (and absolutely bloody everything else) off in the preferences and iTunes plays fine.

I can't seem to find any mention of converting sample rates in my DAWs settings (Ableton) how do I know if it's doing naughty things to my audio? :s

Hmm, actually I just tried dropping some mp3s in and it lists them as wavs once they are in the sequencer so I guess by then it's already converted them...at least like that it won't mess up any mix I do with them right? they will already have been damaged/changed as much as they are going to be?

I'm not exactly new to production but this kind of stuff still confuses me :\

EDIT: There is a button on the audio clips information in the sequencer that says 'High quality rate conversion' Is that what I want to be clicking? it doesn't seem to make any difference to the sound but maybe it's cos i'm not running it through my monitors right now..

Check the Ableton Live 7 sweep versus the Ableton Live 7 High Quality. Then check em both against something like, say, iZotope RX.

I'd suggest reading all the gubbins on that site to understand it all a bit better if it doesn't make any sense

ha. turn off all that shit that itunes puts on music. eq and enhancer and stuff. quicktime and itunes use the same engine, so without all that stuff it should be fine.

still follow all that advice with bouncing to the right rates though

So essentially the less shit going on the better? (in the images) So if the sample I load isn't 44.1khz then I want to use the high quality option.

I'm gonna have to go through all my samples and find out which are mp3 now :\ I don't think it's very many but still a pain to try and find them.

might be dickish, but questions like these are quickly answered in the manual.

Awesome link macc. Really interesting stuff. Low-quality mode looks like it's using linear interpolation at best, which is pretty shoddy, though I wonder if this has been changed in Live 8 since I've never heard the kind of artifacts in Live 8 that I'd expect from a sample rate converter with no antialias filter...

You DEFINITELY want to be using High Quality Mode (globally enable it in preferences) in Ableton. You can really, really, really hear the difference (to my ears it's especially noticeable in the clarity of the high frequencies)
