Not that I have any experience from either side but surely if you are booked to play dubstep then you should do that? A promoter is paying you to perform a service and if you want to get paid then you should go with the program. Promoters dont put nights on for dj's. Obviously there is a little leeway in this but it definitely is not the dj's right to play whatever they want to.

Indeed, and when you book Martyn you have to expect something like this. I went to see him expecting dubstep, and he went full techno. Was one of the best set of the night, he outshined Len Faki in the other room lol
Martyns never been full dubstep though, he's on that TRG vibe. House/Techno with some (if any) Dubstep

There's a difference between playing many styles or things outside of what people expect like Gaslamp Killer, Martyn and Appleblim do and what Pkay has just said.
I mean if someone were to book one of those guys they would expect them to play loads of styles or to possibly stick with techno more than dubstep like Martyn. However if I was just to turn up to Subheavy with a record bag full of the many Iron Maiden records I own. Necta would be fucking furious because I would be being a dick

surely that would translate as just original dubstep?
DMZ isn't exactly chill, nor would headhunter, pinch etc be.. i wouldn't go as far as to drop say Phaeleh - Numb in the dance, but if you are going to DJ a dubstep set, surely drop what you want. Not enough DJ's playing what they want, rather just playing to the crowd. May get you the obvious brownie points, but then the audience never gets the chance to hear anything new before they decide whether they like it or not...
All dubstep is very much danceable, are the bro's afraid that they actually then have put their shirt back on and
dance, rather than push/punch/trip/throw their arms/head bang out of time to power tools?

A promoter is booking you as a DJ, not a jukebox of whatever genre. Obviously playing Iron Maiden records wouldnt be a good idea, but you should play (within reason) what you want.
This is from a DJ's perspective yes but promoters should encourage variety, a whole night of the same vibe is a bit pants really i'd get bored.

depends if you were being a dick, or playing a set to break up the monotony and move the crowd.
9 hours of bro's broing trying to 'out filth' each other or an evening of roots dubstep trying to out beardstroke each other with a heavy rotation of the same style of tunes can get fairly daunting.... and if you know what the fuck you're doing as a DJ you can easily take the crowd to another level by going in a different direction. Dubstep night or not most patrons want to something to dance to that excites them.
If you don't have more in your arsenal than one set genre of music when you show up to a show then you are crippling yourself as a dj.
I don't subscribe to the 'fuck the crowd listen to what i want you to listen to" I'm more into observing the crowd and trusting my instinct that if I'm bored as fuck at the show then they're likely just as bored and when it's my turn on the decks it's time to change that.

expect a certain sound.
I'd be pissed off if I went to see N-Type and he played old Motown records. Yeah its his right as a DJ to drop whatever the fuck he wants, but at the end of the day he's built a reputation for a specific sound, and I don't think its unfair for promoters/party-goers to have a rough idea of what to expect from his, or any other DJ's set.
I don't understand the counter-reasoning. Are you saying that if you promoted a night, with Youngsta headlining, and he played 2 hours of top 40 pop music, you'd be happy with it just because he's not a jukebox and should be able to play whatever he fancies?
Another example, if you went to see Qbert and he was like "Nah I won't be scratching tonight. I thought I'd play some gabba actually, because I've just heard 4 hours of turntablism here, and maaaaan does it get monotonous"
I guess my point is - dubstep is PLENTY diverse enough to not have to play breakcore, or any other genre, in order to switch up the night's vibe.

the point is, most people go to a club to dance to good music. if a dj plays good dance music they will like it. no ones gonna play motown in a club ffs, stop making ridiculous arguments.
