Not trying to change the topic but imo Reaper has taken the useage of samples to the next level.
Media browser allows you to audition samples by just selecting the sample.
Cubase has had this feature since SX2, which was first released in the early 1700's.

yeah of course it is possible to audition samples this way in cubase too : D
but using battery only a MIDI event triggers my kick or whatever sample, thats the point.

Have you guys used Reaper?
Can you tell me it works the same as Cubase media explorer?
I`ve used both and they are totally different.
Auditioning samples live.
Not on there own.

I`m not talking just clicking the sample and hearing it.
I`m talking about having your track playing, clicking the sample and having it start on the loop marker and have it tempo synced.
It`s essentially Stylus RMX without the Stylus RMX.

Cubase doesn`t have the same functionality at all.

explain?

I haven`t found cubase to be able to do this.
I`ve been working with it since sx2 and only found it to be able to audition samples but not in the context of the track.

Have I missed something?

i think it is possible since version C4.5, called Media Bay.

Reaper - push play on your track
Open media browser, locate samples.
click sample and hear while track is playing, tempo synced.

Does Cubase tempo sync anything?
As far as I know you need to import a sample and the tempos are not remotely synced.

Martello - I am using Version 5 but I haven`t found the media bay to perform the same way as reaper's bay.

I find it`s just no where near to the same functionality.

Interesting
Martello - I`ll check this evening.

I honestly moved from Cubase to Reaper a while back because I just couldn`t find this functionality.
Fine, Reaper seems to load everything quicker so that`s a plus.
If Cubase can audition samples live in the context of the track, tempo synced as well.
Might be reason to open up some of the old tracks and work on them.

Might be

I`ve started enjoying Reaper a lot in the last year.

I have maybe 5 years back but I got into Cubase before all of them so no reason to change.
until I tried Reaper and saw a massive improvement in performance.

I use both now depending on my mood.
Generally reaper is my daw of choice for speed and sample use.

Give fxpansion Gesit a go, theres a demo to try out. In my experience much nice to use than battery. If you ahve a bit of cash lying around, NI maschine is the best of them all. i use Geist as a plug in inside maschine. fx and filters and amazing in geist. Maschine has the workflow though.

c i dont agree, i own guru, tried geist.. and battery is still a finer tool if u ask me...

only reason for the two others for me is it has a step sequencer..

I never really enjoyed battery too much. Can you resample with it like geist? I dont think you'll find nicer filters than those in geist, geist also has a cool abelton style song mode which is a nice quick way of knocking out a tune and playing with scenes.

To be honest im using mostly maschine mostly for drums, with geist for percussive parts as the layering options and fx are cool. The slicer and timestretch in geist is also really good and the best ive played with. Anyway theres demo's for most the drum vsts mentioned in this thread. find what works for you. Mike slott uses battery for his drums, and his drums are mental! it just didnt seem the most intuitive program for me.
