I brought up the Mahmudiyah killings specifically because that incident wasn't even remotely related to anything having to do with combat.

Those soldiers picked that little girl, forcibly entered her home, killed the entire family apart from two siblings that weren't home at the time, raped her, killed her, and set the corpse and house on fire.

I do agree that perspectives on this kind of shit can be biased depending on the source in general, but I don't see how there's any other way to look at THIS apart from it being an atrocity.

Always amuses me in a gallows way that humans know that prevention is better than cure. But when it comes to shell shock and PTSD caused by warfare, we seem to be incapable of being interested in prevention.

I was under the belief that we went to war with instruments of death, mega-ton bombs, armour piercing rounds, machine guns that spit bullets at 1,200 rounds a minute, machines and computers that are devoid of emotion. I never realised in all history of warfare there has never been an expectation to that rule, be it bullets or arrows! I didn't realise that humans generally don't wage war on each other with out death and cruelty.

This is exactly what's to be expected during a war, not saying it's right but it's true. There are no clean, noble, wars. It's all bloodshed, innocent lives lost, and psychos with big guns. We are a sick species

I deliberated clicking on the gallery. Once I did I immediately regretted it and clicked it away.

Not justifying this. I can't. I really can't. I just don't think it 'being the West' or 'America' has something to do with it. People in power do fucked up shit when they can get away with it. And one side always criticizes the other for doing something they're equally guilty of. Be it in the USA, the Middle East, South America or India.

In terms of America, I believe that America exercises restraint in the way that it conducts its wars given its overwhelming military superiority.

I mean Abu Ghraib... America's torture jail. You look at what happened at Abu Ghraib, and you look at what other nations have done recently, skinning children while they're still alive, making lampshades out of their skin... I mean, do they compare? Abu Ghraib was Saddam's torture jail, do you think he smeared shit on people and had dogs bark at them and that was the extent of it?

This is in no means to minimize this story, or the other millions of atrocities that have been committed in America's recent wars. Every death is an atrocity. Every person is the child of parents and a family and a community. To loose anyone to war is unacceptable.

The ASVAB is a joke. Throw a bunch of ignorant, uneducated young men in the desert and pump them up about shooting brown people and it's no surprise this shit happens. I'm sure there are worse cases that simply go unreported or unpublished.

Whats with the assumptions in this thread? How the fuck can you sum up a lifetime of frustration followed by a nine month prison sentence in a country where showers are a monthly thing, and then sum that up as "a bit of stress"?

Not justifying anything, but its impossible to look through someone else's eyes.IMO, to say that you can only shows how little you've seen.

I start to loose it after three straight days awake, and that is in the comfort of my own life. Two weeks straight awake, with the potential to get head shot at every moment, a couple of my friends getting killed, a couple with limbs blown off... I really can't imagine that level of stress, and I can't say what I'd be capable of in those circumstances. Anybody that thinks they'd remain the same person that they are sitting behind their computer monitor, well rested, well fed, toasty warm... yeah.

But I can say that the end result of what these soldiers have done is completely unacceptable. But again,the people that have created this situation are the ones truly at fault. If you want to direct your ire at anyone, direct it there (as if there were any consequence to that).
