phase (or shouldnt we all say polarity) cancellation is a complex issue, it depends on a lot of parameters, you could do this only once and encounter very serious comb filtering...
there was a relevant thought pushed by Bob Katz in the chapter to his MasteringAudio book. i vaguely recall that it went something like (regarding stereo, the Haas effect and mono compatibility) : the more complex the delays and stereo techniques you use and the more independently they evolve on each side... the less likely they are to cancel when summed to mono...
best thing is really to switch to mono...
