Once you learn what different modulation routings do in FM8 you can make pretty much any sound, including wobbles and subtractive style stuff. You also have the benefit of the morph window which allows some very flexible modulation of your sounds.
There is an excellent series of FM8 tutorials by Trifonic which are worth a look

fm synthesis is fm synthesis..
it has little to do with substractive, additive, wavetable, hybrid, modular whatsoever...
it is VERY capable. but the question sounds like 'ive tried guitar, doesnt really work, is bass better, or could it replace a sax???''

learn all of em.. but learn them inside out...
the only way is to start by one and struggle with it.
