I'm starting to think the OP doesn't really understand the difference between a Synth and a Midi Controller. There is NO comparison. If you do all your production inside your DAW with "softsynths(VSTi)", you will want a midi controller, which is the MPK49. If you want to do all your sounds away from your DAW, and then have to record the synth into the DAW via an audio interface, then you want a Synthesizer.
Just in case you do know the difference, and you're simply asking if you should go with Midi or Synth, then based on what you said about just wanting to make things easier on yourself, I'd go with the midi controller. You do everything in FL 9, and I'm guessing you already have a synth in there that you are comfortable with. The midi controller will just help make things a bit easier programming sounds in your VSTi. If you got the actual Synthesizer, you're gonna have to learn how to use it all over again.
