yeah i just clocked this, Tesco's influence in the UK is really starting to become obvious.
?!?!? how come so many people that post on this forum are such internet conspiracists? as far as i can tell that report just covers what happened, it has a whole section and quotes from the local mp saying the police were in the wrong. also, just a quick search and loads of reports of this are out there from the big news agencies, the big news selling story is violence and pictures of flames sell....can't see some big tesco conspiracy controlling the news at all.

I don't think anyone said Tesco ran the world.

And I didn't say that is what people were saying. People were implying that Tesco was influencing the news and that this wasn't being reported on properly because of it. Just seems like almost every thread in SNH now gets some conspiracy derailing rather than discussions about what is going on.
....unless there is more to this than is being reported, what is wrong with that BBC report, it seems to just state the facts and then show different viewpoints? Not even any opinion piece on it.

Tesco flexing corporate muscle on the media it seems. Very hard to find any coverage of what is actually happening online right now.

Why no mainstream reporting then?
It's pretty big news when the opening of the leading supermarket chain store sparks a riot, don't you think? Took the BBC until 11.23 today to have something on their website for example.
One good point raised by a local MP in the BBC report -
"I do question why the police op was carried out last night in an area full of bars where a lot of people were out drinking."

None of the videos/pictures thusfar show quite how intense it was.
Petrol bombs, pushing Transits down a steep hill onto a fire in the middle of our high street, police from Wales, police charging & retreating seemingly randomly, was kicking off on every entry/exit to Stokes Croft, helicopters out for 12hours. One guy got beat unconcious and was left unattended 'behind enemy lines'. They blanked everyone when they requested one of the 5 ambuluances in the near area.
The police were essentially silent the whole time, no responses as to why the fuck they were even there.
Check the po-po moon walk outta my road.

When a UK based company makes £67.6 billion a year they are bound to have some influence.

Some scrappy shots I got, gutted I didn't have a camera/lens/flash up to the job.
Was one of the most hectic shoots I've ever had, had to be concious of shit flying overhead at all times or the filth charing from any direction.
Probably the most badass photo I ever took/thing I ever saw.

Well played on getting out there and doing something. It seems the anticorporate/anticapitalist movement is much stronger in the UK right now than the US

If there's anywhere in the UK that'll kick off because of something like this, it's Stokes Croft.
When I heard that the Tesco got the go-ahead, my exact words were "It'll be firebombed within a week".
4 days open and arrests for petrol bombs...
Not my shot but here's the store front this morning.

hopefully the cost of keeping security will make that tesco a pain in the arse for them to keep.
good to see an MP commenting on police heavy handedness too

Excellent photos wubstep, is that a guy with a petrol bomb in his hand?- if it is I'd probably take the photo down or it'll turn up on the police wanted photos.
Good on them, but I guess I'm always a bit capitalist about these things- if people didn't shop there then it wouldn't stay in business/take business from other local shops. There are more important things to riot about.....like heavy handed policing, which I guess is actually why it all got so big?

Heard about this on radio 4 this afternoon. Seemed a balanced report and, if anything, was leaning in favour of the protesters. Said the police were heavy handed and a local labour politician mirrored this view.

Sad how people are willing to hurt people's careers, income and property because they don't like a certain chain store. This isn't going to make any difference to Tesco's. What it will do is set some people back and lose their jobs if it permanently closes down.
