Sums it up really.

But I rarely mixdown myself tbh, my mum normally does it for me
how much would your mum charge to master a track for me?

make sure your monitors or headphones are also of a good quality and giving the response you expect.
Nothing worse than eq'ing a track only to notice that you`ve eq'ed the track to your system which really isn`t as good as you thought from a response standpoint.

It's really not that hard to understand, not to long & it really improves your mixdowns.
EQ & compression is something you'll learn over the years, but read about it... (http://www.dnbscene.com/article/88-thin ... q-tutorial)

Dude I'd love to read that dissertation?! Is it a file like a word doc? I can get a translator...! PM Me?

Just make sure you listen to the right people. You ears will teach you that too. Also, I thought I was s**t hot two years ago, and I wasn't bad, but I cringe when I listen to my stuff from two years back and I've been at it for seven. As you evolve your idea of a good mix does too, just don't expect to be like the people who's records you buy overnight. In fact you probably shouldn't expect to be them in a years time.

I found the Andi Vax mixdown secrets very useful, there is 7 videos 10 minutes long each so you need to stick with it. Gotta get used the the accent but the guy sure knows his stuff.

Trying to get on MTV is like trying to be employee of the month at McDonald's.

Frodo Bassbins wrote:Where did you learn to mix a tune down and get it sounding profesional. (if you can do this)

I am tired of writing tunes that sound flat and bland because i know nothin about how to eq / limit / compress correctly. and also have no idea how to mixdown a tune so it sounds professional. IE. every sound is very distinguishable from one another.

I am not talking about choosing profesional sounds to begin with as i know that is something completely different, and something im also looking into. but basically im asking about where you learned the technical side of audio engineering.

im sure ill get alot of the same "just practised and slowly learned over time" but i have been trying to do that myself for about a year now and i havent gotten anywhere. does anyone have an epic source that teaches these things or some truely epic advice that can get me on my way to being able to make profesional sounding tunes.

thanks in advance and sorry if the question was vague.
I learned it on my own, did it myself, didn't look at any tutorials or anything, I just kept in mind that everything had to fit together while im tweaking the mixdown.

Learn how audio itself works and what each effect does. Once you fully understand how everything effects the process it becomes really logical. As in "I want A to sound like this, so I need to use B to reach that result". Its a bit like music theory. I find that people who work hard and don't really progress in mixdowns usually don't take that genuine interest in making everything sound the best it can

well i don't think anyone's said it thus far...but arrangement is pretty overlooked in these parts. cause it is a DSF and not classical music forum or whatever. i don't think some people consider the frequency space sounds take up in the context of other insturments, and also over time. I notice a lot of pro sounding tracks I like don't have more than 4 or 5 main elements going at once, but the ones that are there sound huge. and that's probably because they can be turnt up without clashing. these aren't dubstep tracks i'm referencing though. dubstep is dead :corncry:

watch every single episode of Pensado's place. seriously. It's amazing what knowledge they are literally giving away (until it expires and you have to buy it).

There's no better resource for audio in the world right now.

I like to think I am good at mixing, but I am probably only kinda decent at it. I get the concept and stuff. I just listen to songs and kinda try and hear how they did there mixdown. I guess it is just practice. You could read the mixdown thread but I am too lazy that would take weeks to go through and read each thread in there!
