I'm not stupid enough to try and re-create any Skrillex bassline. Instead, I'd love to know how he makes the scratchy, screechy, computerized Lead Synth at the start of Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm using Logic Pro and I have Massive, FM8, and Absynth. I prefer to use the ES2 though, as i actually have some skill with it (unlike the other 3.)

I can see it being easy to make in FM8, which is what skrillex uses so he might of used fm8 for that synth lead

i made a very skrillex "yuurrgh" with reason's Maelstrom -- osc's were a saw and a hypersaw, LPF's with two envelopes w/ varying attack n decay phases on each (adjust to taste). Resonance up near 60% or so, cutoff way down (adjust sustain phase of envelopes so the filters don't close off completely). Hypersaw osc i think i dialed the motion knob back a bit.

then, you guessed it ... into the bitcrusher... typical yoy settings. I mean, AFAIK the sound is just a Yoy with a little different flavor. Remember to add pitchbend to make it divebomb, and that oughta do it.

layer with sub and possibly a third layer for more body

WHAT SKRILLEX DOES

I have been anylyzing his style and thinking about how he goes about producing a track.

I dont think that on many of his tunes (with the exception of scarry monsters) he loads every bass sound and alteration into a sampler and then switches back and forth between samples. I think even with his basses he records the automation, exports the wav and then loads it into the NNXT or whatever sampler he uses.

Im gonna try this technique on my next tunes.

I dont think that copying his sound will result in any signed tunes. He is unique. I like his technique and might borrow it, but I dont want to sound like someone, I want to sound like paradigm (myself). I think and producer with integrety will agree that ultimatelly they want their own unique sound.
Skrillex is a hyper maniac and I love him and his music for that. There is no stop in his spout. He has a pure stream of consciousness style which I strive for, its just about removing the fear blocks and the inner censor, then your pure music can come out.

Ryan Enzed is an absolute champion and I've already subscribed to him, but this tutorial is not up to his standards. his recreation sounds nothing like the original skrillex synth in my opinion. :( thanks anyway for the effort though man.

thanks I'll see if I can find a similar preset or something. FM8 doesn't let you do synthesis yourself right? just has presets? that's what i thought when i tried it out, please correct me if that's not true.

FM8 is certainly not just presets.

the SMNS intro lead was very likely done with NI's Pro-53,There are a handful of Skrillex leads that are very obviously done with Pro-53, the leads in Kill Everybody and With Your Friends are pretty recognizable Pro-53 presets that have a little tweaking on them.

on the subject of people trying to copy big producers sounds never really find their own sound, i would disagree to an extent. benga + skream said in an interview that they stumbled on their sound by trying to copy people they looked up to and just kind of found their own style in the process. It comes down to the producer as an individual, they might find their own unique style when they're attempting to emulate a big name, but its whether they realise thats their style or they throw it away in their slavish pursuiit to imitate another persons creativity.

I think everyone forgets that copying should breed experimentation.
Some folks just copy while others copy and learn, create and earn.

sorry, it popped in my head

I kind of recreated Skrillex's Scary Monster bass in FM8. I'll never use it but I learned a crap load about FM8 that I didn't know before.

Why would you want your music to imitate someone elses?
