Elephant and Castle - Really close to central (its zone 1) but it honestly is a shit hole. Might get some nice flats around here but its about a 2/10 for safety and niceness.
ok yeah its a shit hole but never had trouble!

I suppose when I really think about what I'm after is a nice, pleasant area not too far from some greenery, with good, quick and easy transport links to the uni. Nice Victorian architecture and some decent easy going pubs would be a bonus, but not a deal breaker. I'm going to be doing my post-graduate so living in an overly student area isn't a major priority as it's shaping up to be a pretty serious course. Does that narrow it down any further?
Again - many thanks !
really would recommend Fulham/ West Kensington/ Olympia under the criteria you mention above - loads of good parks, nice houses and good pubs

The fish smell in deptford is fucking unbearable... i have to go to deptford today actually, hope it isn't market day
Try lewisham/catford instead, its basically deptford but doesnt smell of fish

been offered a flat in between the aldgate east and liverpool street tube stations. not exactly ideal in terms of proximity to new cross/greenwich, but only 650 pcm for a one bedroom in an area i'm told is up my alley socially. still waiting on photos, and it'd be a 6 month lease we'd have to leave in march, but ninjas-- think it's worth a go?

Cable and the delights of Shoreditch are within walking distance, and Fabric (ish). Getting to New Cross/Greenwich is a bit of a hype though....

ahhh yeah.... you will ridiculously central, exciting area! fuck uni anyway its all about how easily you can get home from FWD, and you will be able to walk home!!! you art students never go to uni anyway

Theres plenty of busses that go sarrrf of the river and you got east london line too,,,plus is within cycling distance if you want to risk your life on a daily basis

650 pcm sounds reasonable if the place is alright too!

I live down the line past new cross in sydenham and often go up towards liverpool st area, a new overground train line goes straight down to new cross from nearby (shoreditch, whitechapel, hoxten stations are all probably pretty close depending on exactly where you are), takes about 20 minutes, trains are big, brand new and air con and not too crowded....don't go quite as frequently as the tube but one about every 10 minutes in peak times. Altogether probably better for commuting on than a tube line.
